Where on earth were all the U15s? Not at Ware for one thing. Only Michaela Roberts and Rachael Kerr bravely flew the flag in the age group as late withdrawals - four on the day - shattered a squad already weakened by the UKWAL fixture and other commitments, such as the English Schools Cup and athletes resting before next week's Schools champs.

But it was not all gloom. Lauren McVicar recovered from a sluggish start to power through and win the senior 200m, and was also a good second in the 100m. A busy Sarah Deacon won the discus after a close context and also took part in four other events before heading north for Scunthorpe and the UKWAL match, while Laurie Cossey was third in a competitive 400m before setting of northwards.

Emma Christmas twice improved her javelin PB, throwing close to 30m in the third round and then smashing that barrier for the first time with her fourth round effort which sailed out to 31m exactly to close in on Mel Harrison's club u17 record.

Chloe van Wulven and Lisa Schofield made it an u17 hurdles double. Chloe sharpened up for the English Schools Champs with an A string win while Lisa posted an impressive solo performance as she equalled her PB despite battling against a headwind and with no effective opposition.

Two athletes returning from long term injuries caught the eye with season's bests. Vicky Smith dipped under her best 800m mark this summer for third, as well as contributing 300m points. Lauren Deadman moved steadily through the 1500m field before a strong last lap effort took her into third place in a strong field. Both athletes were partnered by Robyn Matson was also third in the metric mile, and fifth in the two-lap race.

Sisters Claire and Nina Brennan added useful points before making the trip to join they UKWAL colleagues, and Robyn Delivett ran strong to score in the B 400m

The two u15s who did show ran their socks off and Rachael Kerr was rewarded with an 800m PB.

But despite all the athletes' efforts the depleted team were last with one of their lowest points scores, and are slipping towards the drop zone, as the powerful hosts Herts Phoenix edged out previously unbeaten league leaders Windsor .
