A last hurrah
from the Southern Women was not enough to stave off relegation as they dropped
into Division 2 by just one half point over the six match season. Winners on the
day South London's 22 point margin was enough to overhaul the HMAC ladies by the
narrowest of margins and consign the team to a season in the lower ranks.
The league’s
scoring attributes placings to event points, rather than the more usual match
points. If the latter scoring had been in force the team would have placed four
places higher. In the final analysis the damage was done by the rock bottom
scores in the third and fourth fixtures, with the shortage of under 15s willing
to compete in this league being a key factor, alongside clashes with senior and
junior national leagues.
Starring
performances on the day went to Christina Kalejaiye who set a new long jump best
of 5.55 in her first meeting for 15 months, and Georgie Lou Sales who showed
promise with a 25m javelin best, while hurdlers Nina Brennan (B 100m hurdles –
1st ), Lisa Schofield (300m hurdles) and Nicola Hill (75m H – 1st)
all ran faster than before.
