There were a glut of victories as the Southern Women's team returned to winning ways at Woodford on Saturday in their first Division 2 fixture of the summer 2005 season, after their narrow final match relegation from Division 1 last summer.
In senior competition GB International Kate Brewington notched a trio of victories to celebrate her return to competition, after the ankle injury that ruined her indoor season. She threw the shot to within a centimetre of her lifetime best to take the honours, and was also dominant in the high jump and javelin. For good measure she marked her return to fitness with third in a competitive 200m race.
Sarah Deacon was also a triple winner in the senior match. She opened her account with an A hammer victory and provided good support to take the B string honours in both shot and discus. Lynsey Clark made it a double in the latter competition with A string discus victory and Emma Christmas ensured a clean sweep in the senior throws with a B string javelin win.
Another athlete to post a trio of victories was Lisa Schofield who won both u17 hurdles events, recording an impressive career best in the 300m hurdles race, and she completed her treble with a B string long jump victory.
Senior doubles were also posted by Laurie Cossey (400 & 800m), and Claire Brennan (hurdles & B 200m) and there were good B string wins for Robyn Delivett (400m PB) and Lesley Felton (800m). In the final event of the day Cossey, Delivett and Felton combined with Lauren Clark, who had earlier won the non-scoring 800m event, to win the 4x400m relay.
Completing the senior team were Hannah Gamester who gained vital points in 100m, long jump and pole vault, and Robyn Matson in the1500m.
The under 15s also came out on top in their section. There were win doubles for Bethan Siddons (HJ & LJ B - PB), Nicola Hill (hurdles & B HJ), Catrina McAuliffe (DT - PB & hurdles B). Hill also set a new personal best in finishing second in the long jump, as did McAuliffe with her shot runners up throw. The string 1500m pairing of Emma Fox and Cloe Winter both took the honours, recording PBs in the bargain, and the victory roll was completed by Jessica Humpheryes' discus winning PB.
Becky Owen, Rachel Kerr, Lilla Jacks and Carla Schofield also contributed to the winning points tally.
It was an encouraging result as the team set out their stall for a rapid return to Division 1 action after the disappointments of the summer 2004season
