Another strong senior
throws performance could not prevent the Southern Women's team finishing in
the wooden spoon position at blustery Kingston on Saturday. Mel Harrison (A shot & discus) and Sarah Deacon (A Hammer & B discus) both contributed throwing top points, as did the javelin pairing of Louise Mathews & Emma Christmas. Other senior highlights were the return from a three-month injury lay-off for Lisa Schofield who tackled three events & the sprint relay, placing second in the B sprint hurdles & running 400m hurdles for the first time. Runners up spots also went to her hurdles partners Claire Brennan (100m hurdles A) and Laurie Cooper (400m hurdles B). Nicola Hill ran well in the windy conditions to win the 300m hurdles event for u17s, and was just pipped in the sprint hurdles. She also set a new triple jump PB in the senior events. For the U15s points were hard to come by but there was a javelin double success for Kike Oniwinde and Jennifer Holland. Jennifer also won the B 1500m and was runner up in the B high jump. Sam Hill was second in her discus speciality, and Angela James equalled her hurdles PB despite running into a strong headwind and clattering a hurdle badly. The disappointing result leaves the team in danger of losing their Division 1 status in their first year back in the top flight. They now face a difficult trip to Stevenage on 2 September against higher placed opposition. |
