The newly promoted Southern Women’s League squad were pipped at the post by Team Southampton in their opening Seniors Division 1 fixture at Kingston on Saturday

The track highlights came from Lucy Sargent prepared for next weekend’s British Universities Championships with a sprint double. On the field Mel Harrison improved her PB set in 2006 to claim shot victory and she added discus, hammer and B string triple jump second spots.  Rookie vaulter Karen Baldwin flew over 2.70m in only her second competition to win the pole vault to place second on the club all time list and Danielle Ross equalled her best for B string victory.  Ross added a B high jump victory and triple jump third place.

The sprint relay team took the honours thanks to Chloe van Wulven, Claire Brennan, Zoe Young and Chekube Onwuka.  Each had scored well. B string track wins came from Claire Brennan who posted a hurdles double and Chloe van Wulven who took the 200m B after placing second in both the 100m hurdles and high jump.  Chekuba Onwuka was second in the B 100m and third in the B long jump. Zoe Young added to the points tally with a B shot win and second places in both long jump and javelin.

The 4x400m relay squad placed second thanks to runs from Chekube Onwuka (68.7), Nina Brennan (64.1), Vicky Smith (66.9), Laura Bealey (61.1). Vicky Smith had already had an exhausting day covering all three middle distance events with runners up placings in each. She opened her account with an 800m PB of 2:23.6 and went onto run 3000m and 1500m before running a leg of the 4x400m relay. Laura Bealey and Nina Brennan had earlier both placed second in their 400m events and each added another second place in the 400m hurdles and discus respectively.
