SOUTHERN WOMEN'S LEAGUE, WYCOMBE 20 MAY 2000
LADIES PILE UP THE POINTS
Havering Mayesbrook's Southern Women's team amassed a huge points total in winning their second league fixture of the season at High Wycombe on Saturday, beating Huntingdon, Braintree, Plymouth, and the host club Wycombe.
On the track the team tore the opposition apart, winning 21 of the 29 individual races, and finished the programme by taking all three relays. Backing this success were splendid performances in the field events, which produced a further 11 wins, giving the team the grand total of 242 points out of a maximum of 290.
In the senior age group, there was a league debut for the club's new sprint star Ruth McMenemy, who opened her winning account with a victory over 100m, in impressive style. Fellow sprinter Hannah Gamester took the honours in the B 200m.
Following their gold medal performances at the recent Essex County Championships, Laurie Cossey, Dorita Harmse and Debbie Sullivan continued their winning ways by taking the 400m, 800m and 1500m respectively. There were further wins for Joanne Sullivan and Nikkii Barnett in the A and B 3000m, Lesley Felton (B 800m), Hayley Hawes (B 1500m), Corrina Keevil (B 100m hurdles), and Nina Brennan (300m hurdles).
Ruth O'Sullivan joined Cossey, Gamester and McMenemy to lead off the 4x100m relay squad to a storming win, in the fastest time recorded by the ladies team for some years. Cossey then completed a relay double in the 4x400m with Felton, Debbie Sullivan and Harmse.
In the field there were A and B string victories in both the high jump, Kate Brewington and Corrina Keevil, and discus, Sarah Deacon and Selina Fasulo. Fasulo completed her double, winning the B hammer.
There was an awesome performance in the under 15 age category, where the girls only dropped 6 points out of a possible 105. On the track they were unbeaten in all eleven events, with victories for Laura Jones (100m, B 200m), Danielle Ross (B 100m), Nicola Schofield (200m, 75m hurdles), Sara Luck (800m), Lynsey Clark (B 800m), Megan Foley (1500m), Caroline Smith (B 1500m), Katie O'Sullivan (75m hurdles), and Smith, Schofield, Ross and Jones completing the rout in the 4x100m relay.
It was a similar story in the field, with wins for Luck and O'Sullivan in the A and B high jump, and Melanie Harrison in the B shot. The field performances of the day were left to the final event, with both Harrison and Clark setting new personal best throws, when winning the A and B discus.
The next league fixture is a home match at Mayesbrook Park, Barking, on Saturday 24th June, when the competition will be from Bracknell, Hounslow, Parkside (Harrow), and Brighton. With wins from the first two fixtures, and home advantage in this match, it is hoped that a third consecutive success will set the team on course for promotion to Division 1.
