SOUTHERN WOMEN'S LEAGUE, MAYESBROOK PARK 24 JUNE 2000
Havering Mayesbrook's Southern Women's team maintained their unbeaten, top of the table position, with an emphatic win in their home fixture at Barking on Saturday, beating teams from Hounslow, Parkside (Harrow), Brighton & Hove and Bracknell. On both t he track and field it was a day for fine performances, with two club records broken, one equalled, and no less than 10 personal bests.
In the senior category, Laurie Cossey's build up for the English Schools Championships in July was well on course, with wins in both the 400m and 800m. Ruth McMenemy having finished second in the 100m, went one better later in the day winning her favoured 200m. There was a family victory in the 1500m, with sisters Debbie and Joanne Sullivan running together for the first time this season, taking the honours in the combined A & B race. Nikkii Barnett continued her good form, and the team's success winning the 3000m.
In the 100m hurdles, Kate Brewington smashed her own four-week-old club record of 15.35 secs, when finishing second in 14.9 secs, the same time as the winner. In the 400m hurdles, an event that has been difficult to fill, thrower Sarah Deacon once again showed her tremendous team spirit by turning to the track, setting a new PB.
On the field Kate Brewington's day continued with a win in the high jump at a new PB height of 1.61m. Team mate Corrina Keevil made it a double taking the B high jump, and then completed her own individual win double in the B triple jump. There were other wins for Sue Bunting (B long jump) in a seasons best jump of 4.66m, and Selina Fasulo (B hammer) with a throw of 21.46m. In the pole vault, Hannah Gamester equalled the club record of 1.90m in only her second competition at this event.
In the under 15's it was the now familiar stri ng of successes, 15 wins from the 21 events. On the track, running in an older age group, 11 year old Megan Foley again confirmed her incredible potential by not only winning the 1500m, but by shaving 3 seconds off the under 13 club record that had stood for 20 years. Inspired by this performance, Caroline Smith won the B 1500m, reducing her PB by over 10 seconds to 5 mins. 00.2 secs. With further victories for Laura Jones (100m), Sara Luck (800m), Lynsey Clark (B 800m), Claire Sargent (75m hurdles), K atie O'Sullivan (B 75m hurdles), the points total soon passed the 200 mark.
It was a similar story in the field, with wins and new personal bests for Katie O'Sullivan (1.51m) and Sara Luck (1.45m) in the A and B high jump, and Lynsey Clark (28.72m) in the B discus. Melanie Harrison was unbeaten throughout the afternoon winning the discus, javelin and B shot, and Caroline Smith gaining her second win in the B javelin.
Under 17 Noleen O'Leary, making her league debut for the Southern Women's team, gained immediate success by taking the B 80m hurdles, whilst Nina Brennan in the A race set a new PB of 13.4 seconds in finishing in third place. The day was rounded off with both 4x100m relay squads, Sargent, Nicola Schofield, Michelle Haley and Jones (U.15), and Brewington, Terri Johnson, Gamester and McMenemy (seniors), storming home to clear victories.
The next league fixture is at Bromley, Kent, on Saturday 15th July, when the opposition will be Bromley, North Devon, Crawley and Worthing.
