SOUTHERN WOMEN'S LEAGUE, BROMLEY 15 JULY 2000
FOURTH VICTORY FOR SOUTHERN LADIES
Havering Mayesbrook's Southern Women's team virtually clinched their promotion to Division 1 with another resounding win at Bromley on the 15th July, beating teams from North Devon, Crawley, Worthing, and host club Bromley. With two fixtures left, and sitting at the top of the table, the team's aim now is to beat nearest rivals Exeter to the Championship title.
In her build up to the Scottish National Championships at the end of this month, senior sprinter Ruth McMenemy showed what splendid form she is in by winning the 100m and 200m, both in seasons best times of 12.1 and 24.9 seconds. Having missed the previous fixture, Dorita Harmse marked her return by finishing second in the 400m, and then taking the honours in the 800m.
Joanne Sullivan celebrated her birthday by adding the 1500m to her impressive record of wins, whilst 100m sprint hurdlers Kate Brewington and Claire Brennan notched up a double victory in the A and B races respectively.
In the hammer, the first field event of the day, Sarah Deacon and Selina Fasulo gave the team a flying start by winning both competitions. More successes soon followed with Sue Bunting in the triple jump, and Hannah Gamester completing a personal double in the long jump and B pole vault. In the A string pole vault, Sue Deboos equalled the club record of 1.90m, finishing in second place.
Club newcomer Laura Coleman, showed why she is Kent Schools senior javelin champion by setting a new club record with the new specification javelin, finishing the day in second place. This record is likely to be improved even further, for Laura's throw of 32.72m is still below her personal best.
In the under 15 age group, sprint duo Laura Jones and Nicola Schofield lead the way in blistering style. Laura setting new Grade 1 PB's in winning the 100m and 200m, and similarly, Nicola winning the B 100m and B 200m with new Grade 2 PB's. The 80m hurdles saw yet another double victory with Claire Sargent recording 11.5 seconds, her fastest time ever, and Katie O'Sullivan taking the B race.
Although finishing second in the 1500m, 12 year old Megan Foley once again broke the under 13 club record. Having stood for 20 years, Megan has now improved the record twice in a matter of three weeks. Sara Luck (800m) completed the wins on the track, and then turning to the field, added the B high jump. The pairing of English Schools bronze medallist Melanie Harrison, and Lynsey Clark in the discus, maintained their 100% winning record in all the Southern Women's league fixtures this season.
The next league fixture at Hemel Hempstead, on Saturday 12 th August, will involve the top four teams in the division, and will probably decide the Championship. The opposition will be Exeter, Dacorum & Tring, Thurrock, and relegation troubled Croydon.
