SOUTHERN WOMEN'S LEAGUE, MILTON KEYNES 2 SEPTEMBER 2000
SOUTHERN LADIES CONFIRM TITLE AND WIN PROMOTION
Havering Mayesbrook’s Southern Women’s team finished their tremendous season in style by clinching the Division 2 Championship title, at Milton Keynes on Saturday. Defeating Southampton, Havant, Oxford and the home club, in this sixth and final match, they retained their unbeaten league record to top the table well clear of nearest rivals Exeter.
The
team soon led the competition, and with a constant flow of good performances,
maintained the no.1 spot throughout the afternoon. Individual victories were more or less split into two groups,
the under 15’s on the field, and the seniors on the track.
In
the under 15 group, Katie O’Sullivan and Sara Luck got the team off to a
flying start by completing a winning double in the A and B high jump, whilst at
the other end of the stadium Caroline Smith collected more good points with a
victory in the B shot.
12
year old Emma Bonny, competing two years above her age group, continued her
remarkable first season with the club by taking the long jump with a leap of
4.83m. Although the jump was in
excess of the previous under 13 club record, which had stood since 1983, it was
just short of the 4.92m that Emma recorded back in June.
Melanie
Harrison, already with 11 wins to her credit, brought her season’s Southern
League tally to 13 by winning the discus and javelin.
There were further wins from Caroline Smith (B discus), Amy Rogers (B
javelin) and Danielle Ross (75m hurdles).
Team
captain Debbie Sullivan provided the first win of the day for the seniors in the
800m, knocking almost 2 seconds off her personal best time, and was immediately
followed by Lesley Felton taking the honours in the B 800m.
There were two further double A and B string wins – Dorita Harmse and
Joanne Sullivan in the 1500m, and Debbie Sullivan and Nikkii Barnett in the
3000m. Dorita, running her last
race before returning home to South Africa, finished her season on a high note
recording an impressive time of 4.31.6. She
will be sadly missed by the club next year.
Laurie
Cossey (400m) and Sarah Deacon (B javelin) completed the individual victories
for the seniors. Cossey then teamed
up with Felton, Terri Johnson, and Joanne Sullivan to round of a superb season
for the team by winning the 4x400m relay, the final event.
The ladies have only been out of Division 1 for two years, and are very pleased to be returning to the top flight, where their aim will be to continue this season’s wonderful form and team spirit, and consolidate themselves in the upper half of the table.
