South of England Cross Country Champs, Holkham Hall, 27 Jan 2007

Senior International Faye Fullerton, & the Under 13 Girls' squad, were just out of reach of the medals as they finished fourth at Saturday's South of England Champs held at the delightful setting of Holkham Hall, Norfolk on Saturday.

The under 13 girls provided the only complete team of the day, with a series of good runs, with many of the athletes running in their first major championship. Eleanor Bounds led the team home in 14th place followed closely by Rebecca O'Neill (23). The scoring was completed by Rachel Sadler (50th) and Rebecca Stanley (61st), tallying 148 points, as Bedford took bronze with 143 points. The team was well supported by Sharmila Golan (68), Amanda Blaxland (95), Jessica Seekings (105) and Deborah Knight (106) in a field of 123.

Faye Fullerton produced a fine run to finish fourth in the senior women's race to show that she is on the way back after illness and injury-enforced lay-offs.  There was another good performance by Harriet Scott in 7th, and  Angela Thompson continued her route back to fitness in 152nd place.  In the under 17 women Georgie Sales produced possibly her best race at this level finishing in the top 10 in 9th place. Alex Beard ran well for her 51st place in a field of 85. Likewise in the junior women competition, held with the U17s, there were only two athletes with Robyn Matson well placed in 12th and Hayley Stibbs 24th.

The under 15 girls’ event produced good club performances as Jennifer Holland (13th) and Sidnie Sales (15th) ran exceptionally well over a testing course with its gentle undulations, uneven surface and beautiful scenery. They were supported by Michelle Lovell (133), but alas no 4th scorer.

Unfortunately the boys did not seem to appreciate the fine scenery and good conditions and few made the trip to Norfolk with a very poor turn out. One who justified his trip was Ross Clarke who made a welcome return to action with ninth in his first junior men’s race.  For the U13 Boys Ryan O'Mahoney led the boys home in 47th place, closely followed by Jonathan Seekings in 59th and Adam Edwards in 95th. Only Jamie Buckley Stanton made the trip for the under 15 boys and was rewarded with a good finish for 70th  place.

The senior men could only field two athletes but what was lacking in numbers was made up by Rob Warner taking the clubs highest senior place in a South of England for many years in 72nd. Tony Collins had a steady run finishing 283rd on the dry fast course.
