South of England Cross Country Championships, Parliament Hill, 25 January 2014

Another rainy spell meant that club runners had to endure more muddy conditions at Saturday's South of England Cross Country Championships at the ever-challenging Parliament Hill venue, Hampstead.

The Under 13 Girls  have been all-conquering on the county scene but struggled to make the same impact at Regional level. Kate O'Neill was the first athlete from an Essex club to cross the line in 26th, with Sophie Rand in 69th and Becca Brown (106th) getting the better of an out-of-sorts Katie Mitchell, who did well to finish. There was little to separate Jess Mitchell (194th), Catherine Barker (198th) and Molly Bath (201st) and Kate Walker (280th) & Chloe Morter (284th) also saw it through but Lucy Priestly was spiked early on & pulled out.

A great run saw Lydia Hallam place 18th in the Under 17 Women - and Sarah Wilson wasn't far behind until she took a tumble in the last quarter mile and had to settle for 33rd

Debbie Appleton was first Senior Women to finish in a useful 34th and Vicky Smith ran well for 43rd, with Robyn Matson 76th. Angie Thompson returned to club colours in 255th, Jane Hallam was 324th and Clare Rudgley 413th in the large field.

The Under 17 Men's squad again put in solid results with Abdul Mohamed first into the finishing funnel in 101st, 30 places ahead of Matthew Braybrook with Euan Harlow & Bradley West coming home together in 188th & 189th. Andrew Holland flew the flag for the Under 20 Men with a respectable 85th position while Tony Collins braved the Senior men's course in 876th.

Lois Wyatt heading the Under 15 Girls' quartet in 141st, with Emily Marshall next in 164th with Grace Matched and Emily James 243rd & 251st.  The Under 15 boys race saw Oliver Bath (157th) get the better of Tom Sheldrick three places back for the club's first athlete home while Oliver Morter & James Stewart were also close together in 211th & 214th. John Fennessey in 150th led home the Under 13 boys with Sam Atkins with Sam Shrimpton & Matthew Bight (259th & 273rd) also in action.

The rearranged Essex Schools Championships are scheduled for Hylands Park on Saturday 1st February but with more rain forecast the organisers will no doubt be hoping that the course isn't waterlogged again.
