South of England Cross Country Championships, Parliament Hill 28 January 2017

Kate O'Neill was highest placed of the club athletes as she finished tenth in the Under 17 Women's event at the South of England Cross Country Championships at the ever-challenging Parliament Hill course on Saturday.

Still in her first year of the age group Kate ran strongly on the traditionally hilly course to make the top 10, with the only Essex athlete ahead of her was Chelmsford's English Schools' International Khai Mhlanga. Sophie Rand placed a good 51st and Emily James 160th but with in-form Jess Mitchell opting out the club were one short of a scoring quartet.

Ben Davis' fine 18th place led home the Havering trio of Under 20 Men - all finding the distance tough in their first year in the age group. James Stewart battled hard to finish in 76th with Kieran O'Hara completing the club contingent in 87th.

There was once again an impressive turnout from the Under 13 Girls with nine club athletes toeing the line. Sydney Foley was first home in 45th with first year Natalie Sewell 86th in her first Southern Championships. Annie Grannell, 120th & 145th placed Chloe Rand, another first year, completed the scoring four who finished a respectable 12th. Ava Poulson, Holly Bradley & Hannah Yexley were close up in 221st, 22nd & 224th and Jessie Collier (255th) & Rebecca O'Rourke (269th) also in action.

Alex Friend was first club finisher in the Under 15 Boys' race in 85th and Dominic Jarvis (177th), Louis Berrett (242nd) & Reece Debenham (285th) combined to place 26th. Matthew Blacklock placed 86th to lead home the Under 13 Boys' squad. Sam Bradley (217th), Oliver Yexley (230th) & Shane Hart (251st) were the other scorers in the 35th placed team, with Alex Kerr 260th & Lenny Houston 281st.

There were incomplete teams in all the other age groups. Sam Atkins (59th), Lewis Debenham (10th) and Oliver Bath (153rd) were the shorthanded Under 17 Men's squad while the Under 15 Girls -  Lily Bath (135th), Grace Dukelow (167th) and Molly Bath (245th) - were also one short of a scoring team as

Owing to illness and injury only four brave senior men toed the line for the demanding nine mile course. Gary Atkins was first home in 672nd just in front of Steve Walker in 683rd with Richard Rowe 839th and Tony Collins 1008th also facing the challenge. Bella Woods was the sole senior women finisher in 207th, after Vicky Smith dropped out late on, and Georgia Phillips alone flew the club flag for the Under 20 women in 73rd.
