Spring Warm Up Meeting 2004, Sunday 28th March 2004

It may have been officially spring but no one told the weather, as a cold wind did its best to dampen the enthusiasm of the 260+ athletes who flocked to Mayesbrook Park on Sunday as Havering Mayesbrook hosted their traditional pre-season open.

Despite the chill conditions competition was hotly contested with home athletes in the thick of the action. Matt Russell broke to 11.0 secs barrier in winning the senior men’s 100m but had to pull up with cramp when leading in the 200m event as the weather took its toll.  Luke Stott stepped up an age group to the u20 category in style to win a 100/200m double, a feat repeated by Lilla Jacks in the u13 girls’ competition.  New comer Eugene Ayanful added to the sprint successes when he scorched to victory in the u15 boys race

Michael Waller was a worthy winner in the u17 men’s 400m race and there was a trio of wins in the 800 races as Ingrid Deane got the better of rival Kathrine Foy (Newham) to edge the u15 girls race, while Steve Payne (u13) and Christopher Sullivan (u11) made it a double in the youngest boys’ categories. Michaela Roberts was victorious in the u15 girls 1500m.

Chloe van Wulven was an impressive winner in the u17 girls 80m hurdles in a fast 11.7 secs, also taking the high jump for good measure, and in the same age group Helen Roche won the 300m.

Sarah Deacon’s 45.80m hammer effort dominated the senior women’s competition and showed she could be on the way to another record-breaking season. She also come out on top in the senior discus. Hannah Gamester claimed a senior jumps double with long jump and pole vault victories, and Danielle Ross made an encouraging debut in winning the u20 vault, to go to third on the club all time rankings for the age group. Kirsty Smith took the long jump in the same age group.

Siblings Chris Newton (U17m) and Lauren Newton (U15g) each took double field honours with shot/discus and discus/javelin win doubles, while Louise Yard won the u17 shot.  In the final javelin event the powerful Bone Buwembo made a successful debut with a 38.45m throw, and promises much more to come.
