UK Women's League, Division 4, Yate/Bristol, Sunday 7 July 2002

The Havering Mayesbrook Senior Ladies team shrugged off key absences and late withdrawals to put in spirit performance in finishing third in their second UK Women's League Division Four fixture at Yate, near Bristol on Sunday.

The middle distance events brought the most success as Debbie Sullivan and Laurie Cossey both notched wins. Team captain Debbie led by example as she followed up an 800m second placing with a close 1500m victory over Bristol's Dorothea Lee. She also anchored the 4 x 400m relay foursome to fifth. Laurie Cossey was the only other HMAC winner nosing in front for B 800m victory, and later returning to make it a double in the 400m B, and then running the opening 4x400m leg.

Hayley Mottram provided good support with third place in the 400m A and then setting a new PB in the 200m event. In a busy day she also contributed legs to both relays.

There was a welcome return to action from club triple jump record holder Sue Bunting who leapt to runners up spot as well as scoring valuable long jump points. Corrina Keevil covered three jumping events with her best result coming with a B string triple jump third.

Thrower Sarah Deacon returned from holiday to take hammer second place honours as Bristol's Sarah Moore broke the Divisional hammer record, and the Havering Mayesbrook 19 year old gained placings in the discus and shot as well. Another thrower in good form was Laura Coleman who launched the javelin to a season's best and second place. She also scored shot points and even tackled the pole vault - albeit unsuccessfully! Her pole vault partner Hannah Gamester was rewarded with third place points and also competed in the 100m and sprint relay.

Sprinter Terri Johnson found the going tough in her preferred 100m & 200m events but she came away with a smile as she upped her hammer best again.

The Brennan sisters, Claire and Nina, notched up good hurdles points. Older sister Claire placed third in the 400m event before equalling her four year old PB in the 100m sprint hurdles for fourth, while Nina made her debut in the national league with a pair of third placings tackling the high hurdles for the first time. Nina made it a hat trick of third places when she was identically placed in the discus, while Claire also tackled the high jump and sprint relay.

Completing the thirteen who made the trip were Hayley Hawes who competed in the 5000m for the first time and placing a creditable fifth, and Helen Biscoe, with useful 1500m points as well as a 4x400m relay leg.

With the third and final fixture taking place at Cardiff in three weeks (3 August) the promotion positions already seem to be out of reach as Newham and Newport repeated their first & second placings from the first match.  The Havering Mayesbrook ladies are fairly comfortable in third, and although not yet safe from relegation it looks more likely that any two of the five clubs below them will suffer that fate.
