UK Women's League, Cardiff Sunday 31 July 2005

Second place behind hosts Cardiff on Sunday ensured that the UK Women's League team were promoted to Division Two at the first time of asking.

The youthful team had entered the fixture in a strong position, in second spot behind home team Cardiff after two of the three league fixtures which had seen them place first and third in the eight team division. HMAC's promotion hopes were threatened if local rivals Newham had produced the same kind of a strong performance that they had in the second round.  But after an initial flurry of good results Newham's challenge faded and with the hosts Cardiff confirming their title form with a runaway victory a good all-round Havering Mayesbrook team performance secured second place on the day and in the league

The throws were again the bedrock of the team's success with three B string victories - a shot and javelin double from Mel Harrison - plus third place in the discus - and Vicky Thompson's B hammer win. The other throws all resulted in second and third places. Sarah Deacon was third in the hammer - losing out on second by just two centimetres - and second in the B discus.  Consistent Emma Christmas was again close to her u20 club record when placing third in the javelin, while multi-eventer Kate Brewington's shot put runners up spot proved to be her best placing, as she was third in the 100m hurdles and fourth in the long jump.

There were three track wins too, with juniors Harriet Scott & Robyn Matson doubling up for victory in a slowly run 3000m and Claire Brennan scoring maximum points in the 100m hurdles B. Brennan also gained a pair of B string third place finishes ion the high jump and 400m hurdles. Her A string partner in the latter two events was Chloe van Wulven who was fifth in the 400m hurdles and third in the high jump.

Faye Fullerton tackled the first 800m of her injury-wrecked season and was pleased with her second place finish in one of her fastest ever times.

Hannah Gamester saw action in three individual events and the relay and was third in the B long jump, fourth in the pole vault and fifth in the B 100m. Robyn Delivett set a new PB for fourth in the B 400m and also gained fifth place points in the 200m. Laurie Cossey gained a fourth place double in the A 400m & B 1500m, Helen Roche was fifth in the 800m B, Christina Kalejaiye placed sixth in both 100m & 200m, and Denise Harris was seventh in the 1500m. Kirsty Smith's fourth place triple jump completed the team.

The promoted Cardiff & HMAC teams now face Wakefield and Glasgow - relegated from the top flight - and current Division 2 outfits Liverpool, Southampton, Swansea and Wigan next season.
