The Senior Women’s team opened their UK Women’s League campaign with a spirited fifth place in their tricky Division 2 fixture at Wigan on Sunday.  Although badly missing their big-batters plus several other students bogged down in university exams, the squad rallied round to produce a fine team effort.

With powerful Windsor Slough, Eton & Hounslow run away victors, first place points were hard to come by. Runners up placings were gained by several club members with the club’s strong javelin squad again to the fore. Louise Mathews, throwing off a short run due to her knee problems, launched the spear to a season’s best of 38.62m and Emma Christmas was also second in the B event.

Kirsty Smith left the best to last in both long & triple jumps. Her final round long jump effort  of 5.31m moved her up into third place and she repeated the pattern in the triple jump where her 11.54m final leap improved her to second. In between she earned 100m B points & returned to run a good sprint relay leg.

Claire Brennan ran a powerful 100m hurdles race to gain B string second place, and scored in the high jump & 100m, and also added a relay leg.  Her hurdles & relay partner Lisa Schofield made a good league debut. She ran strongly in the latter stages of her 400m hurdles race to come through into fourth, but found the strong headwinds difficult in the sprint hurdles, finishing sixth; she added 200m points and ran a good sprint relay opener.

The final sprint relay member was Hannah Gamester who earlier had to contend with competing in the pole vault & long jump simultaneously, on different sides of the track. After bowing out of the vault, where she placed seventh she was able to concentrate on the long jump where she was third in the B string.

Several team members answered the call to plug vacant slots. Laura Bealey took time out from her studies at Sheffield University to make her league debut in the 400m hurdles and improved her PB with her first sub-70secs clocking. She agreed to cover the vacant 1500m B slot & earned five precious points in fourth, beating one opponent and with three clubs having no B competitor.

Another student who made the trip was Robyn Matson who travelled across from Birmingham to tackle the difficult 800m & 1500m double, placing third in the 800m B and sixth in the 1500m A.

Katie Richardson doubled up in both 800m & 400m only 40 mins apart, and then agreed to contest the triple jump where she improved her week-old best to 9.37m for a place in the club’s top-15 lists.

Lauren Clark filled gaps in high jump & 200m after her main 400m race, and was another athlete, who along with Bealey & Richardson who dragged tired legs round in the 4x400m relay where the almost fresh Nina Brennan (who had contested the 400m non-scoring race) joined them, placing a valuable sixth.

The throwing events produced solid points but two key throwers were affected by injury. Mel Harrison had tripped & damaged ankle ligaments the previous day while at the Southern Women’s league fixture but made the long journey northwards with a heavily strapped ankle. In the circumstances fourth place in the discus & sixth in the shot were a bonus. Sarah Deacon strained a groin muscle with her hammer opener, for fourth, and although her discus efforts were below 30m she earned B string third. The remaining thrower Vicky Thompson was fourth in the B hammer & fifth in the B shot.

Team manager Tony Benton hopes that if a stronger team is available for the second round at Eton on Saturday 7th July then such sterling doubling & trebling up to dig out the points won’t be needed.
