The UK Women's team got their season off to a flying start with a fantastic third place finish in their Division 2 fixture at Hendon on Saturday.

The middle distance events were the backbone of the team's success with five victories and two second places.

Jus one week after her sub-16 minute 5000m clocking Lauren Deadman showed that her speed has not suffered as she sped to an 800m/1500m double, controlling both races before kicking clear of the opposition for victory in season's bests of 2m 11.41s and 4:28.79s respectively.  She was ably supported by Faye Fullerton who turned the B 800m into a time trial as she blasted to a 2:12.75s win, almost the straight clear of her competitors.

Ingrid Deane and Robyn Matson were also a class apart in the 3000m taking on the pace and leaving the others behind to make it an impressive Havering one-two with Ingrid slicing eight seconds of her PB with 10: 35.17s and Robyn Matson coming home in 10:47.56. Robyn returned to track duty little more than an hour later, claiming second in the B 1500m behind Lauren Deadman's A string victory. The middle distance points tally was boosted as Vicky Smith returned from an injury lay-off to place second in the steeplechase in 7m 43.63s, coming through strongly after a cautious start

Kike Oniwinde provided the best field result with javelin victory with a fine 46.62m throw and good points came in the pole vault thanks to Leanne Butler & Hannah Connor who were third and second respectively with 2.70m and 2.10m clearances, with Hannah adding long jump points. Ellie Watson scored two third places and one fourth in the B string high & triple jumps and 100m relay. Her jumping partner Bethan Siddons picked up a pair of fifth places.

Katherine Knight launched the hammer for a new personal best of 27.78m for sixth and added fifth place points in B discus & javelin.  More important field events points were contributed by Zoe Young (long jump B & shot A), Amy Cox (B hammer) and Nona Brennan (B shot).

Track points were hard to come but the whole team battled well to cover the gaps and score vital points for the cause. Claire Brennan covered both hurdles events, placing fourth in the 400m hurdles and fifth in the sprint edition, as well as adding a season's best in the 200m.  Esther Tele set season's bests in both 100m & 200m, while Faye Fullerton returned after her 800m win to cover the 400m A slot, while Nina Brennan returned to 400m track action after a break due to knee surgery.

The relay teams combined to add more key points as Zoe, Claire, Esther and Hannah were a fine fifth in the sprint relay, and the makeshift 4x400m squad of Lauren Clark, Nina, Zoe (again) and Ingrid Deane carried the baton round for a point.

Team Manager Tony Benton was delighted by the team spirit that produced a better than expected third place finish which will be a useful buffer against the difficult fixtures at Wigan (2 July) and Grangemouth, Scotland in August.
