Havering Mayesbrook’s UK Women’s League team are flying high after another fabuloss third place finish at Wigan on Sunday lifted them to second in the Division 2 table with after two of the three fixtures

The barriers proved no obstacle as club athletes swept the board in the hurdles and steeplechase. Nicola Hill made a winning return from injury to come home in front in the opening track event, the 400m hurdles and Claire Brennan followed suit in the B string.  Chloe van Wulven continued the victory roll taking the sprint hurdles honours with her second fastest-ever time in the A string and Claire made it a winning double with B string victory and later added fourth place javelin points.  Vicky Smith added another win over the barriers when she came from behind for victory in the steeplechase having already “warmed up” in the 800m and stepping into a gap in the 400m.  A sixth track victory came from Robyn Matson who won the B 3000m (and went on to score 1500m points) as Ingrid Deane was third in the A competition. U20 Gemma Phillips earned excellent points with third in the 1500m and fourth in the 800m B races.

Kate Cowley provided the sole field event win in the pole vault and added two third places in the triple jump and javelin. Chloe van Wulven’s good form extended to her other events as she was runner up in both high jump and 200m B, and Ellie Watson was also second in the B high jump, and third in the triple jump B.

Hannah Connor dashed between the pole vault and long jump to good effect as she was second in the B pole vault and third in the long jump, as well as scoring fifth place 100m points.  Nicola Hill was close to her 200m best in finishing fourth and busy Heidi Nicholas was fourth in the 100m, fifth in the long jump and sixth in the 400m in her individual events.

Lauren Clark’s new discus PB earned her fifth place and she scored vital points in both hammer and shot, and Nina Brennan covered gaps in discus, hammer and shot despite an injury which prevented her running.

Chloe, Nicola, Claire and Heidi combined well to bring the baton home in third in the sprint replay, and Lauren Clark replaced Nicola Hill to join the other three in the 4x400m quartet as the team crossed the line in as solid fourth place.

It was another superb all-round team effort and with only the final 4x400m relay and the final field event results to be added the squad were lying second after a great afternoon’s results but Glasgow overhauled them. Winners on the day Wigan are two points clear at the top of the table and the Havering outfit’s second successive third place lifted them to runners up spot as first round winner Harrow slipped up. Havering travel north on 7th August with genuine promotion chances although with the third-placed Scottish club hosting the final fixture at Grangemouth they will have a tough fight on their hands.
