A fourth place finish at a very wet Grangemouth Stadium on Sunday ensured another season in the UK Women’s League Division 2 for the senior ladies squad after finishing fourth in the league table. After arriving in Scotland in rainy conditions on Saturday evening, more overnight rain and conditions getting progressively worse on Sunday the ladies turned in another great all-round team display. Vicky Smith kept up her fine record in the steeplechase adding another convincing victory, to add to her win at Wigan last time out and runners up in the first fixture. She had earlier added a third place finish in the 3000m, with Robyn Matson finishing second of the B string competitors. Robyn was also third in the 1500m B event, with Lauren Deadman placed runners up in the A – the same position that she had earlier placed in the 800m. Versatile Lauren Clark was third in the 800m B, and was fourth in the discus and threw a hammer PB for fifth. Zoe Young was victorious in the B string javelin as the downpour threatened to swamp the run-up, with Kike Oniwinde placing third in the A string. Zoe also finished fourth in the long jump and Kike seventh in the shot. Hurdler Nicola Hill concentred on the sprints to good effect equalling her 200m best in placing third, and was only a fraction outside her best in the shorter 100m sprint where she was sixth. Heidi Nicholas provided good support in the B races finishing fourth in each and also adding 400m points. Chloe van Wulven and Claire Brennan covered the hurdles, both finishing fourth in the A string races, Chloe in the 100m hurdles and Clarie the 400m hurdles, while in the B strings Chloe was second in the 400m event and Claire fifth in the 100m hurdles. Chloe also placed third in the high jump as Bethan Siddons was also third in the A competition. Bethan added sixth place in the triple jump with B string Ellie Watson third in the B. Another third place was provided by Hannah Connor in the B long jump, and Hannah also placed fourth in the pole vault, held in the indoor area due to the heavy rain. Nina Brennan covered the throws with fifth in the B discus and seventh in the hammer & shot. The fourth place finish, after third places in rounds one & two, capped the best season from the ladies for several years, achieved despite two potentially difficult away fixtures in Wigan and Scotland. With promoted Glasgow and Wigan and relegated Wakefield & Medway leaving the division for next summer, to be replaced with four clubs from the south of England, summer 2012 ought to result in three matches closer to home |
