The senior women's team were edged into fifth in a close finish in heat-wave conditions in their opening UK Women's League Division 2 fixture at Portsmouth on Sunday as only 11½ points covered the top five teams .
Alexa Joel returned to track action in club colours after a few years away and posted the only track victory of the day, kicking mid-race after an early slow pace to take a comfortable victory, after placing second in the 3000m event.
Emma Christmas marked her return to action from a persistent shoulder injury that forced her to miss the last three seasons with victory in the B javelin and she also scored valuable points in hammer, with a new PB and discus. Debbie Knight marked her league debut with fourth in the javelin and Nina Brennan covered hammer, discus & shot gaps.
Vicky Smith and Gemma Phillips scored well in the middle distance events. Vicky was not far short of her 800m PB in finishing third, before placing second in the B 3000m and second again in the chase. Gemma shrugged of the effects of recent illness to fill a gap in the 800m B and came close to winning the B 1500m, losing out in the last 30 metres.
Kate Cowley had to settle for a pair of second places and a third. She equalled her outdoor best in finishing second in the vault and was also second in the triple jump before placing third in the shot. Hannah Connor was second in both the B long jump and pole vault, and set a season's best in the 100m.
Claire Brennan's strength on the run in brought her second in the sprint hurdles in a blanket finish and she was also fifth in the 400m hurdles and fourth in the A high jump. Flic Clarke provided strong support with third place in both hurdles B races. Ellie Watson was third in both B triple and high jumps.
Basildon's Heidi Nicholas, competing under Higher Competition Rules, was an early leader in the long jump, eventually finishing third and scored points against strong opposition in the 100 & 200m and ran in both relays. Another HCA competitor, Colchester's Heather Shepherd was fifth in the 400m and sixth in the 200m.
Team Manager Tony Benton said "We left Portsmouth believing we were fourth but there had been problems with the results software and when the results were fully checked we lost out on fourth by half a point. It was still a great result considering we had quite a few athletes missing and the whole team worked hard to win extra points so hopefully with a stronger team at Stevenage on 1 July for round 2 we'll be even more competitive. Well done everyone!"
