A battling team effort  earned the injury-affected senior ladies squad another year the the UK Women's League Division 2 as they placed sixth place at Derby on Sunday.

Vicky Smith led the way on the track with another win in the steeplechase after clocking season's bests in both 800m in fifth and third place in the 3000m.  Robyn Matson's storming last lap won her the B 3000m in her fastest clocking since 2010 and she returned to the track to place sixth in the 1500m.  Gemma Phillips travelled to Derby to race the 1500m but agreed to cover a gap in the 800m which she did in style to come through for third and she also added third place points in the 1500m and scored ion the discus.

Bethan Siddons juggled two simultaneous events to place second in the high jump and third in the triple jump, with Ellie Watson fourth in the B triple in a season's best. Chloe van Wulven competed despite limited sleep and long hours after a heavy working week as a retail area manager and scored well with third in the high jump, fourth in the 400m hurdles and fifth in the sprint hurdles. Claire Brennan successfully nursed her injuries through both hurdles races and was rewarded with excellent second & third places.

Louise Lockwood made her delayed league debut after an early season injury, winning the B javelin and scoring in the shot while a busy Emma Christmas was third in the A javelin, set a PB in the hammer and added 100m points.  Zoe Young was an injury doubt until the last minute but ruled herself fit to compete and was in fine form. She was close to her long jump best in sixth, set a season's best for fourth in the B 100m and placed fifth in the B shot. Hannah Connor returned after a knee injury to win the B long jump.

But the team spirit was typified by Nina Brennan and Rachel Kerr. Nina had been restricted to the throwing events this year after a succession of injuries but agreed to step in to cover the 400m for a point and excelled to place fifth, while Rachel who had been called up earlier in the week after recovering from a stress fracture, covered the A 400m placing a fine sixth for three points as well as adding a point in her selected 200m and running herself to exhaustion in both relays - but was still smiling at the end.

Team manager Tony Benton was relieved that the squad had held onto their division two status and was full of praise for the squad. "After narrowly escaping relegation last year we were definitely at risk going this year but the squad rallied round to fight for every point to ensure our thirteenth straight season in the national league. Claire Brennan and Hannah Connor, who competed here, along with Lauren Deadman who competed in round 1 were in the squad which qualified for the UK League in 2001 while Nina Brennan, Chloe van Wulven, Robyn Matson and Emma Christmas had all competed at Derby for us in the national junior league finals in 2004 and 2005. The club is lucky to be able to call on such loyal, long-standing athletes and others who competed today at times like this."
