Havering ladies' National league season got off to a flying start with a third place finish in their UK Women's League Division 2 fixture at Crawley on Saturday. And the team, which included six teenagers alongside the more experienced squad, offered much promise for future success.

International Lauren Deadman boosted the club cause with a double victory, just a week after her 5-mile road victory in Cardiff.  After finishing almost 200m clear of the 3000m field for a front-running victory, Lauren returned to take control of the 1500m over the latter stages to secure a second win for the team. Vicky Smith took a break from her medical finals to place third in the 3000m and made it a winning double in the metric mile, and with her typical club spirit filled in gaps in both relays.  Teenage League debutants Lydia Hallam and Heidi Surman-Wells both excelled with runners-up spots in both 800m races, but Heidi aggravated a hamstring niggle in tackling the 400m. Another teenager Bella Woods took 12 seconds off her PB for runners up in the 'chase and stepped straight back on the track in the 4x400m relay!

Louise Lockwood  was in brilliant form in the javelin, adding four metres to her best, with a 48.21m effort, the third longest throw in the UK this year and taking her within reach of the 49.35s club record. Emma Christmas defied an Achilles injury to place second overall and make it a winning javelin double.  Rachel Forder was third in the discus and fifth in the shot and Nina Brennan covered gaps in the throws, with her best result coming with fourth in the B discus.

Bethan Siddons got a share of the spoils with equal first in the high jump and added triple jump third place, while the experienced Kate Cowley was third in the A triple jump, equal third in the high jump, and fifth in the A long jump. Zoe Young was fourth in the long jump B and Tina Quinlivan equalled her PB & club veteran's record in placing third in the vault.

More teenage success came from Michelle Hughes who improved her 200m PB on her debut after placing second in her 400m hurdles speciality, Tayla Humm who powered through to place third in the B 200m after a season's best in the 100m, and Lucy Bailey who again improved her best against strong opposition in the sprint hurdles for sixth. Michelle & Tayla also contributed to both relay teams who scored vital points and ensured a third place finish.

Team manager Tony Benton said "It was a great way to start our season, especially after a slow start to the day which saw us back in sixth place. But as usual we come through strongly and now look forward to the second match at Bedford on 6th June where we hope to do well again and welcome back some others who were unavailable this time."
