Some excellent individual results could not stop the Havering ladies finishing seventh in their second of two UK Women’s league fixtures at Southampton on Saturday.

GB International Lauren Deadman provided a boost to the squad with front-running victories in both the 3000m and 1500m.  Her 3000m run of 9:15.8 which saw her lap over half the field bettered the listed divisional record by almost 15 seconds and her winning 1500m time was just a tenth outside the divisional mark. Lauren also showed good speed with the fastest club split in the 4x400m relay. Vicky Smith partnered her in her usual style with fourth & fifth place points, with the 3000m a season’s best.

Bethan Siddons was in superb form, winning the high jump before improving her triple jump best for third and stepping in to fill a gap in the B sprint hurdles, for another third place. Claire Brennan’s 400m hurdles season’s best produced her first B string win for five years and she added sprint hurdles and high jump points.  In the A 400m hurdles Michelle Hughes’ season’s best placed second and she was also second in the long jump, as was B string Zoe Young with her best this year.

Emma Christmas won the B javelin as Louise Lacy was third in the A, and Georgie Taylor and Rachel Forder were fifth and second respectively in the discus, while Georgie & league debutant Rachel Evans were fifth & fourth in the shot.

Nina Brennan shrugged off injury to run in the 400m & 4x400m relay and an unwell Lucy Bailey added sprint points.

The sprint replay squad showed team spirit as javelin thrower Emma Christmas and high jumper Bethan Siddons were drafted in alongside Michelle Hughes and Claire Brennan.

Team manager Tony Benton was left to rue late withdrawals which meant the short-handed team lost ground on their rivals. They now face a difficult deciding fixture in Manchester next month to retain their position in Division 2 which they have held since 2009.
