A depleted ladies national league squad finished seventh in the opening match of three at sunny Wigan on Sunday. With just eight athletes available - none of them middle distance athletes - the outcome wasn't a surprise and as a bonus the ladies finished ahead of the promoted Reading squad.

The squad battled hard all day for points and took on extra events to help the club cause.

The javelin pairing of Louise Lacy & Emma Christmas recorded the best results with Louise runner up in a competitive event and Emma taking full points in winning the B. Both added hammer points and Louise was also fifth in the B shot and Emma covered a sprint relay leg.

Flic Clarke returned to competition after a four year maternity break and was third in the B sprint hurdles, fifth in the 400m hurdles and covered a 200m gap. Nicola Hill returned to club colours with fourth in the long jump and scored in both 100m & 400m. Club vice chair Claire Brennan was fourth in both pole vault & 400m hurdles B, and sixth in the 100m hurdles A, and joined Flic, Emma and Nicola in the sprint relay.

Sixteen year old Elysha Thatcher-Gray acquitted herself well, finishing close to her shot PB in fifth and was also fifth in the B discus. Nina Brennan added 400m B 7 discus A points and Beth James was fifth in the B long jump and added triple jump points.

Team manager Tony Benton said "I couldn't have asked more of these eight ladies. We have a battle in the remaining fixtures to hold onto our hard-won place in Division 2, which we've occupied for the past ten years but we bounced back last year after finishing seventh in the first round."

Round 2 is at Stevenage on Sunday 4th June..
