Havering’s UK Women’s League team are down but not out as they lost their long-held Division 2 status after bringing up the rear at Leigh on Sunday. Although on paper the squad might pull off another great escape, as they did last year, this was always a remote hope as the team were unable to field several key points scorers. With just eight athletes available to travel to the north-west it came down to a battle to cover the minimum number of events needed to ensure their league status under league rules, which the battling squad comfortably achieved.

Lauren Deadman repeated her winning double from Round 2 lapping most of the field for a season’s best in the 3000m, and also running away with a comfortable victory in the 1500m event.

Chloe Williams clocked one of her fastest ever sprint hurdles times for third in the sprint hurdles, added a season’s best in the high jump and was fourth in the B 200m. More good hurdles points came from Flic Clarke who improved her career best in placing fourth in the B sprint hurdles and set a season’s best for fourth in the 400m hurdles to round off a fine comeback year. Another season’s best came from Claire Brennan, fourth in the B 400m hurdles and she also added shot & javelin points.

Nina Brennan added to the tally in the 400m, hammer and discus, as did Emma Christmas in the javelin, hammer and shot, while Robyn Matson and Vicky Smith made the trip despite carrying injuries and both added points in two events for the cause.

Team manager Tony Benton said “There was great team spirit, and we will carry that forward to Division 3 next season where we will hope to bounce back quickly to regain the Division 2 status which we’d held since 2009”.
