The young athletes Under 13 & Under 15 team started their Youth Development League campaign in style  on Saturday with a resounding victory at Basildon. The team took an early lead and never looked back, ending the meeting some 56.5 points clear of second placed Orion.

The powerful Under 13 Girls were dominant with nine wins, six second places and three thirds. Isobel McDonach bagged a hat-trick of wins in 75m, 150m & shot, with her 150m PB the fourth best ever by a club U13 and 75m mark the seventh best. For good measure she was a member of the winning sprint relay team, combining well with Isabella Purdie, Rebecca Brown & Katie Mitchell who had all scored well in their individual events. Rebecca had earlier won both the B 150m & the A 1200m to enter the all-time club top 10. Isabella had placed second in the hurdles, 75m & long jump, with her hurdles time the fourth fastest ever by a club u13, and Katie had improved her 800m best for second.   More victories came from Mayi Hughes & Elizabeth Adams' high jump double and Kate O'Neill's B 1200m win, with second place from Jessica Mitchell's B 800m PB, and third places from Rochelle Constable (Long jump) & Yinka Shokunbi (shot) completing the impressive line up.

The Under 15 Girls were not far behind with eight wins - including all four B string throws - with four seconds and four thirds. Modupe Shokunbi made light work of both sprints with comfortable wins but had to work harder to secure victory in the relay, taking over in fourth and getting up to snatch victory in the final strides. Emma Sharp won the javelin, with Elysha Thatcher-Gray winning the B while Lily Swift won both B discus & hammer, and Tolu Akingbade took the B shot, as well as 100m second place, while Freya Gutteridge scored well in the A shot, discus & hammer. Shannon Dooley & Holly Nash were both second in the hurdles, as was Emily Marshall in the B 1500m.  Solid points were gained by Josie Waddams (200m, long & high jumps), Jessica Mitchell (800m), Amy Baggs (1500m) and Annie Maguire (long jump).

The Under 13 boys contributed three wins but 10 runners up spots. Max Law won the javelin and was second with PBs in both the hurdles and high jump and Jairzinho Morris won the long jump and was second in both sprints  Joseph Hogan O'Neill won the B high jump, was second in the long jump and filled a gap in the 800m. Sam Mezoori was second in both B 200m & shot and third in the 100m, with Oliver Swift second in both shot & javelin. Jack Holder, Keiran Davies and Sonny Climpson added middle distance points before Max, Jack, Sam & Jairzinho were second in the relay.

The inexperienced Under 15 Boys recovered from late withdrawals to work hard for points,  recording a winning javelin double, thanks to John Nelson and Harvey Addison, with Harvey also second in the B shot, while another second places came from Matt Owers' 300m PB, after good points in hurdles and high jump. Morgan Seaman showed great team spirit with PBs in both sprints, and filling an 800m gap and holding onto third place in the 4x300m relay. Vital points were won by Jack Noons (200m & 300m and both relays), Oliver Morter (800m) and Michael Vanderhook (1500m), Emeka Abazie (100m), Zack Killoran (hurdles, high jump, hammer & 4x300m relay) and Ben Murphy (long jump & sprint relay).

It was certainly one of the best performances by a young athletes team for several years and similar winning results in the remaining fixtures will see the squad promoted to Southern Premier Division 2.
