The young athletes’ Under 13 & Under 15 squad lost their Youth Development League premiership status after placing last at Eton on Sunday. But there was still much to cheer as the good conditions produced a glut of personal best performances and a club record.

The Under 13 boys provided the headlines with seven victories, including an amazing javelin performance from Max Law whose winning 45.76m throw was the longest in Britain this year and the third longest ever by an U13, a new league record, and of course further improved his own new club record; Max won the B shot for good measure. Jairzinho Morris had a trio of wins, with victories in both sprints & the long jump, with a PB in the 200m.  His B string partners all did well with Tobi Idowu winning the B 100m, Sam Mezoori improving his 200m best and Joseph-Hogan-O’Neill winning the B long jump, as well as placing second in the shot & high jump. Jairzinho, Tobi & Sam combined with Aaron Freshwater to place second in the sprint relay in a season’s best time.  Peter Brinton-Quinn improved his best for second in the B javelin and there were also PBs for Victor Hughes (800m & hurdles) and debutant Luke Chester (1500m).

There were just four Under 15 boys but all performed with credit and justified the trip.  Paul Okesola won the discus with a throw close to his best and added hammer & shot points, Oliver Morter & Jack Rice were third & second in their 1500m strings, both setting personal bests, while Sam Atkins improved his best in both 300m & 800m.

The Under 15 girls gave a strong all-round display.  Sophie Taylor’s discus PB earned her second & Yinka Shokunbi won the B string, also improving her hammer best. Becca Brown improved her 1500m best in runners up spot with Kate O’Neill winning the B string while in the shot Elysha Thatcher-Gray won the B string and Philippa Gill was third in the A string & also set new hammer marks. More second place points came courtesy of Mayi Hughes with a hurdles PB, with Isabella Purdie second in the B, and Mayi added a javelin PB.  The 800m duo of Katie Mitchell & Emily Marshall were both third, as was Hollie King (long jump) while Abigail Shipton (200m) & Holly Nash (100m & 200m) both improved their bests. Isobel McDonach (300m & relay) competed the roster with Jessica Mitchell (800m non scoring) in reserve.

The young Under 13 girls squad gave their all and although points were at a premium they recorded a glut of 14 PBs so well done to the following for their new bests: Ella King (75m & 150m), Chloe Morter (75m & 1200m), Charlotte Fransham (150m &shot), Ann Cooper (800m), Amy Buckley (1200m & high jump), Adelaide Thatcher-Gray (shot), Ellie Darkins (javelin), Grace Griffiths (long jump & high jump), and Rosie Brown (75m).
