Havering's promoted Youth Development squad stepped up a level in style, with a fine runners-up spot in the first Southern Premier 2 fixture at Harrow on Saturday. And the team now have high hopes of further promotion as the superb result was achieved despite the absence of several first-choice team members due to the mini-marathon and other reasons.

The Under 15 boys notched up nine victories, eight of them in the field events. Max Law did enough for a javelin win after finishing second in the discus, Joseph Hogan-O'Neill won the hammer and  discus and Robert Moore won both hammer & shot B competitions. JJ Morris & Tobi Idowu took full points in the long jump, with JJ second in the 200m A, and Aaron Freshwater equalled his PB to place second in the B high jump. Alex Friend front ran to victory in the B 800m and also ran a PB for second in the 300m B. .

The powerful Under 13 girls' team look hard to beat after some quality results.  Ruby Mace excelled with high jump and hurdles victories, and her B string partners Alice Atkins (hurdles) and Nine Esho (high jump) also contributed maximum points, and Alice added B string long jump runners up spot. Erin Gibson's PB took the javelin A string and Paige Robinson was second in the B string. Mali Grant combined with Ruby, Paige and Isabella for relay second place in the fastest time by a club U13 quartet since 2013.

There were just three wins, all in B strings, but seven second places in a good all round performance by the Under 15 girls' team. The victories came courtesy of Adelaide Thatcher-Gray's B hammer PB, backed up by her javelin second, and Robyn Moody's discus B win and Elize Bonning's hurdles success. There was a hat-trick of throws runners up spots, thanks to Grace Griffiths B shot, Millie Hodges Javelin and Rosie Brown in the A discus. The versatile Rosie equalled her best in placing second in the 300m while Molly Sweetman's new PBs in the 300m B & 800m A string both placed her second.

The Under 13 boys' team were affected by absentees and late withdrawals but scored steadily for the cause. Ashton Thatcher-Gray's long jump PB took the honours and a javelin PB placed him third. Oliver Yexley & Casey Fletcher were both second in the shot, and there were third places for Oliver Botham in the high jump and Alex Ford (800m). Joshua Grant completed the six-strong line-up.

The lead changed frequently during the afternoon as the well-matched teams jostled for points but at the end of the afternoon a late surge by Portsmouth edged victory by just 5.5 points.
