Havering’s young athletes continued their fine season with a fourth place finish against the strongest teams in the South in the highest division of the National Youth Development League for Under 13s & Under 15s at a wet and windy Southampton on Saturday.

The throwing events were the pick of the bunch for the Under 15 Boys with every Havering athlete placing in the top three. Ejiro Akpotor won the shot, was runner up in the discus, and third in the hammer, Phil Okoh won the B discus on his debut, Brad James & Peter Brinton-Quinn were both second in the javelin and another debutant James Mears was third in his shot and hammer events. More top three field placings went to Daragh Thomas (high jump second) and third placings for Peter Brinton-Quinn (vault) and Kimathi Christie, who was also third in the 800m.  Edoardo Sonzogni won the B 800m and there were third places for Ashton Thatcher-Gray (hurdles) and Sam Bradley (1500m).

The Under 13 Boys turned in another good performance with four victories.  Oliver Yexley extended his unbeaten record with another javelin win and was also runner up in the shot. Dominic Alexandru won the B hurdles, with Jacob Blanc second in the A race, and Jack Botha won the 100m B event.  Oliver, Jacob, Dominic and Jack also took the relay honours.  Matthew Blacklock and Shan Hart were both second in the 1500m and 800m respectively and Lewis Dixon was third in the B high jump.

The Under 15 Girls’ strength in the field provided all their top three placings.  Robyn Moody won the discus, against the host club’s higher ranked Elizabeth Adamson and Alice Brown won the B string.  Adelaide Thatcher-Gray provided the only other victory in this age group in the javelin, with Jessie Collier third in the B.  Jessie was also second in the B vault, with Alice Atkins third in the B, both in new PBs. Lola Kuponiyi was second in the shot & B high jump and Nike Esho third in the high jump A.

Uche Okpalauko provided two of the three wins for the Under 13 Girls winning both the 75m race and high jump B events. The other victory went to Freya Higginbottom in the B 150m, and Freya added second place in the high jump and third in the long jump, both in PBs which rank her in the club all time Under 13 top 10. Paige Robinson was second in both her 75m and 150m sprints and third in the hurdles before joining Freya, Uche, and Paris King in the second placed sprint relay quartet. Other third places went to Hannah Yexley in the B shot & 1200m and Natalie Sewell (800m A).

National Champions Southampton are well on their way to defending their title from former champions Blackheath, but Havering are battling Bracknell for the vital third place, which would offer a qualifying route to the
National Final.
