Havering’s young athletes were a respectable fourth place in their first fixture of the season in the highest division of the National Youth Development League for Under 13s & Under 15s at Bracknell on Saturday.

The Under 15 Girls recorded six wins, with the field events providing five victories, and a club record. Lola Kuponiyi smashed her six-day old Under 15 & Under 17 club shot record with a UK leading distance of 13.72m, and also added second place in the B hammer. Alice Brown was close to her recent best in winning the discus and Freya Killilea's PB to win the B bagged her an English School's qualifier and she also won the B shot. Paige Robinson was joint winner of the B high jump and Bella Smith won the 100m in a photo finish, as the runner up shared the same time. Uche Okpalauko set a new 200m PB in placing second in the B race and joined Paige and Bella and Aaliyah Payne who won the non scoring 100m in the second placed sprint relay squad.  Freya Higginbottom added two third places in the B 300m and long jump.

There were seven wins for the Under 15 Boys. Ejiro Akpotor starred as he won the shot and discus and was third in the hammer and Patrick Maclean-Tattan took full points in the B hammer and discus. Bradley James added two metres to his best in winning the javelin with Oliver Yexley winning the B in a PB and also placing second in the B shot. Toby Bishop was second in the hurdles and 100m B, both in PBs and was also second in the B high jump. Jacob Blanc won the B hurdles and was A string high jump runner up. Jed Oni was third in both the 200m B and long jump and along with Toby, Jacob and Malcolm Oshungbohun was in the third placed sprint relay quartet. Charlie Black (300m B) and Ashton-Thatcher-Gray (B long jump) added to the list of top three finishes.

In the Under 13 Boys age group Dominic Alexandru won both the hurdles and high jump, with his 1.52m clearance the third nest ever by a club Under 13, and was 100m runner up. Younger sibling Sebastian set a new PB in winning the B hurdles. Daniel Lammas impressed with a huge PB to win the B 200m and Lewis Dixon was second in the B 100m.  Robbie Brown won the B javelin with Joel Hutton third in the A, and Joshua Lee-Prime set a new PB in placing third in the 800m. The Alexandru brothers, Daniel and Tomas Greening formed the second placed sprint relay squad.

The inexperienced Under 13 Girls team battled hard for points. Top three finishes were earned by the fast finishing Ruby Higgins who was second in the 1200m in a fast time, just outside the all-time club top 10, the high jump pairing of Isabelle Bartlett and Charlotte Grundy, both second strings, and Heidi Aylen who improved her best for third in the hurdles. A special mention to Emily Wapshott who stepped in at a couple of days notice to fill a gap in the B 1200m for her first club competition, only days after joining.

The club's fourth place finish was an encouraging result, given that the squad were missing most of their usual middle distance selections who were resting ahead of the London Mini Marathon the next day, so the squad will hope to challenge the clubs ahead of them next time out. Promoted Reading were comfortable winners as defending champions Southampton had to settle for third.
