The Havering Mayesbrook Under 17 & Under 20 team got their season off to a flying start when finishing second behind the hosts in the first-ever Youth Development League fixture at Stevenage on Sunday.

The new League, which combines the former National Junior League (U20s) and the Under 17 section of the old National Young Athletes League posed a new challenge as it required clubs to roster three athletes per event, one of them competing in the U17 only section. Although the club were short-handed in the middle-distance events, they covered most other spots and produced some excellent individual and team results which meant for a promising start to their league campaign.

First year U17 Michelle Hughes starred for the ladies, finishing the day unbeaten in her four events. She opened the track proceedings with victory in the 300m hurdles in a new PB, stormed to victory in her first attempt at the 400m, just holding off  partner Lydia Hallam who took B string honours in the combined A & B race, and improved her best for triple jump victory, with the fourth longest jump ever by a club U17. Her fine day ended when she anchored the U17 4x300m quartet to victory after legs from Georgie Taylor, Heidi Surman-Wells and Louise Lear had put her into a winning position.

Georgie Taylor comfortably won the U20 shot & discus and improved her 300m best, for fourth, Debbie Knight provided another win for the U20s in the javelin and Laura Drew took full points in the B discus and shot and was second in the hammer. Second places in the U20 competition came from London Mini Marathon winner Lydia Hallam in the 800m, Bella Woods (1500m), Mercy Gutteridge (pole vault) and Nina Olatunbosun with PBs in both long and triple jumps. More U20 points came from Chenice Constable (long jump, high jump & 200m), Louise Lear (200m PB) & Charlotte Crow (100m).

For the U17 strings, Rachel Forder easily won the discus but was second in the shot and third in the javelin. Heidi Surman-Wells was second in the 800m and added 200m points, and Lucy Bailey added points in both long & high jumps.

For the men George Hadler scored highly winning the 400m hurdles in a new PB, ahead of training partner Robbie Clarricoats, who set an impressive time in his U20 debut at the event. In the sprint hurdles George won the B with Robbie second in the A, both setting new PBs, and the pair combined with newcomer John Adekoya and U17 Michael Duncan to win the 4x400m relay. Adekoya had also impressed in winning the B long jump, placing second in the triple jump and improving his 200m best and Duncan had also performed well winning the U17 discus and was just overhauled in the last strides of the 400m placing second in a new career best.

Multi eventer Josh Olawore returned to long jump form winning with a 7m+ jump, also winning the B discus & placing second in the shot.  Dan Bristow scored well in the throws, winning the U17 javelin in a new PB, winning the U20 B shot and placing third in the hammer.  Pat Lear won the U20 javelin and Ed Thompson won the U17 pole vault and added high jump points,

Injured all-rounder Alex Law confined himself to the throws winning the U17 shot in a new PB, second in the U20 discus and scoring in the hammer.  Tom Pitkin smashed his 400m hurdles PB for second in the U17 race and added sprint hurdles points.

More vital points were added to the men’s tally by Jake Nelson (400m, high & triple jumps), Matthew Sturges (100m & 400m and 4x100m relay), Brad West who bravely tackled both U17 1500m & 3000m races, Ebrahim Marenah (100, 200m & relay), Elliott Nunn (U17 800m PB), Lewis Middleton (long jump, high jump & javelin) and James George (100m & relay), unwell Dan Wilson (hammer) and Sam Olofin (relay).
