The bright sunshine at Sutcliffe Park, Eltham on Sunday produced a bumper crop of personal bests and brought a fine second place for the Under 17s & Under 20s squad in their Youth Development league match.

Among many highlights an U17 women’s squad sliced over three seconds off the club 4x 300m relay record in the final event to end the meeting on a high.  Georgie Taylor put the squad in close contention with her opening leg, handing over to Sarah Wilson who built up a clear lead, which Heidi Surman-Wells added to before Michelle Hughes’ storming anchor made sure of the record.

All four had earlier won their events.  Georgie had won both the shot and discus and was a fine second in the 400m, Sarah had won the U20 800m and was runner-up in the triple jump, and Heidi had won both the 300m hurdles, on her first effort at the distance, and then the U17 800m.  Michelle rounded off a busy week which saw her represent Southend High School for Girls in the World Schools Championships in the Czech Republic, arriving back on Thursday before travelling up to Gateshead again with the school team who defended their intermediate girls’ title, arriving home at 1.30am on Saturday.  After a few hours sleep she joined the club team to record wins in shot & 80m hurdles and was also part of the winning U20 4x100m relay squad.

Also in the 4x100m squad were Chenice Constable, another who had competed for her school Coopers in Gateshead on Saturday, but her late night showed little effect as she twice improved her high jump best, was second in the 200m and fourth in the long jump. Nina Olatunbosun who had won her 100m B race and was second in the triple jump ran a fine bend and Tayla Humm who marked her league debut with runners up spots in both sprints before anchoring the squad to victory.

Mercy Gutteridge returned after a one month lay-off after a nose operation to equal her outdoor club record and added javelin points and ran a fine bend leg for the U17 relay squad. Hannah Swift’s discus PB won her the U20 B competition and she was second in the B javelin & shot, & third in the hammer in another PB. Bella Woods set PBs in the 400m hurdles & steeplechase, placing second in the latter and also the B long jump.

Zoe Rudgley was second in the B 800m and scored in the U17 javelin, and sibling Ella was a late stand-in placing second in the B 400m and hammer, and third in the U17 discus.  Lucy Bailey, also up in Gateshead on Saturday, equalled her 100m best and Louise Lear had a busy day scoring in 200m, 300m and running in both relays.

The men’s English Schools’ bound athletes also produced the goods.  Josh Olawore won the long jump with a 7m+ leap and smashed his shot best to win with a 14.34m effort, fourth best ever by a club U20.  George Hadler eased to a 400m hurdles win and improved his 200m best to win the B, while Robbie Clarricoats made light work of the 110m hurdles race and ran a season’s best in the 100m.

Their hurdles training partner Tom Pitkin took over a second off his PB to win the U17 400m hurdles and also improved his 100m hurdles best, while pole vaulter Ed Thompson won the B 400m hurdles and was third in his speciality.  Hurdler Karl Tucker was second in his sprint hurdles & jogged round to win the B ‘chase and his A string chase partner Nick Duffey had a great day, improving his best in second, placing second in the B hammer, third in the discus and just missing out on an 800m PB.

John Adekoya impressed in the high jump, starting the competition with a best of 1.70m, he improved it three times to clear 1.85m for a place in the club all-time top 20. He was second in both long jump & triple jump, in another PB, and also set a new career mark in the 400m. Dan Bristow scored well in shot, javelin & hammer with two PBs,  Michael Duncan won the U17 discus and improved his 400m best.

More PBs were bagged by debutant Michael O’Callaghan (400m), Elliott Nunn (800m), sprinters Ebrahim Marenah (100m) & Sam Omo-Olofin (200m & long jump) & James George (long jump)

Matthew Braybrook improved his 800m best before setting a new chase mark in second, and Brad West was close to his 1500m best in fourth. Pat Chimhini had the misfortune to strain a hamstring in his non scoring long jump  & had to withdraw from his sprint races.

The fourth fixture is at Biggleswade on 28th July and Sunday's results has ensured another year in this division.
