All-rounder Mayi Hughes  added another string to her bow when she smashed the club Under 17 triple jump record in her first attempt at the event. Her 11.25m leap added 18 cms to Kirsty Smith’s 2003 mark and the 15-year-old had two other jumps measured beyond the old record.

It was just one of a number of fine performances as a great team performance achieved an unexpected second place on the day.

Mayi’s triple jump win was one of eight victories for the Under 17 women's team, one of which was her 80m hurdles win, after placing second in the 300m hurdles. Jess Mitchell and Catherine Barker won both 1500m strings in style, and Catherine also added B string 3000m honours as Kate O’Neill took the A.

Elysha Thatcher-Gray won the B shot with Izzy McDonach second in the A, and also second in the discus, while Tomi Sanwo added B triple jump full points.  Philippa Gill was second in the hammer and third in both javelin (PB) & discus.

The relay squads of Millie Redgrave, Mayi, Tomi & Holly Nash (4x100m) and Izzy, Philippa, Kate & Jess (4x300m) both placed second. Amelia Owers added important points in three events, including second in the 800m.

Michelle Hughes was a class apart as she won all five of her Under 20 women's individual events, including a javelin PB. Katie Dawson won the 400m, improved her 200m best and was second in the triple jump.

The Under 20 men's squad scored well. Lewis Bailey dipped below 11 seconds to win the 100m and was second in the 200m, with Fraser Boston second in both B races, both in PBs. The 400m pairing of Tom Pitkin both returned from injury with mixed fortunes. Pitkin was well placed when his hamstring tightened and he eased home in fourth but Matt won the B string comfortably.

Ben Davis won the ‘chase after placing second in the 1500m and Finn Hutton won the 800m well, with Michael Duncan the B string runner up, after winning the B hammer. Ed Brinton-Quinn scored well in the throws with three second places and Alex McCree was second in the triple jump and third in the long jump. And middle distance runners James Stewart & Aidan Elmore picked up useful points for the cause.

Oliver Morter's late charge took full points in a photo finish in the 800m for the Under 17 men and Lewis Debenham took the B, and was also second in the 400m. Shandell Taylor won the B, and was second in the high jump. Jack Rice set a season’s best in placing second in the 1500m and Sam Atkins was fourth in the 3000m. Kieran Riddell scored well in hurdles (PB) and javelin.

The team are still in with a good chance of promotion at the half-way stage in the four-match season and are vying with Basildon Beagles and Orion for the automatic promotion spot.
