Havering’s athletes made the most of home advantage to come from behind to claim a narrow win over the combined Newham & Basildon squad at a bitterly cold Hornchurch on Sunday.

The strong Under 20 Women’s team led the way with 10 wins. Chimdi Okpalauko bagged a pair of wins in the A shot (PB) & discus, as did Elysha Thatcher-Gray in the B shot & B javelin. Jess Mitchell (800m), Sophie Rand (1500m PB) & Kate O’Neill (3000m PB) made light of the conditions and Georgia Phillips (400m & 800m) and Catherine Barker (1500m) added full points in their B string events. Runner up spots went to Emily James (‘chase), Holy Nash (B triple jump) and Keturah Christie (high jump)

There was also a strong performance from the Under 17 Women.  Molly Sweetman and Grace Dukelow took full points in the A & B strings on their 3000m debuts. On the field Alex Adeniji won the shot in a PB to gain the English Schools’ National standard, and was also second in the discus, as Rosie Brown won the discus B string. Adelaide Thatcher-Gray won the javelin while Jade Kavanagh won the long jump and was second in both the 100m & 200m sprints. More second place points went to Poppy Ellis (300m) and Amy Kilner (B string triple jump)    

Shandell Taylor starred for the Under 20 Men with wins in the high jump (PB) and long jump and second in the 200m and triple jump. Kieran O’Hara improved his best to win the B 1500m with James Stewart runner up in the A event. Kieran was second in the B 400m, while James was also second in the 3000m in a new career best, as was A string Sam Atkins – good running in the cold & windy conditions. Tom Keevil was 800m runner up on his debut and other second places were earned by Under17 George Barnacle was B string second in the chase and Kieran Riddell (40m hurdles) and Matt Agnimel (400m) added more second places before Lewis Debenham, Tom Keevil, Sam Atkins and Ben Davis combined for second in the concluding 4x400m relay.

Max Law and Charlie Savill took full points in the javelin for the Under 17 Men team, with Savill second in the B shot. Louis Berrett and Oliver Woods took full points with wins in the A & B steeplechase while another track win went to Reece Harriott in the B 200m after placing second in the A 400m. Jamal Thomas & Kimathi Christie were both second in the high jump, as was Ben Olusesan in the triple jump and Hal Hutton (B discus). Alex Friend’s 800m run completed the individual second places and Somto Okpalauko and Oliver Ray joined Ben and Kimathi to add second in the 4x400m relay.

The victory gives the club a flying start to the season and they will hop to build on this in their second round match hosted by bottom club Stevenage on 27th May.
