The promoted YDL Under 17 & Under 20 squad produced some great results but found the going tough in their opening top flight fixture at Reading on Sunday.

The Under 17 Men's team were close to full strength and scored well with five individual wins. Sam Sanusi and James With both improved their bests to win both sprint hurdles races and Sanusi jumped further than before to place second in the long jump and With was second in the hammer B. Brad James won the 400m hurdles on his debut at the event, setting the fifth fastest time ever by a club U17 at the event, and was third in his javelin speciality as Peter Brinton-Quinn won the javelin B string and was third in the B discus. Kimathi Christie won the B triple jump, as Jed Oni was third in the A, and Christie was also second in the 200m B race. There were third places for Daragh Thomas (B high jump), Malcolm Oshungbohun (100m B) and Alex Ford in his steeplechase debut after improving his 3000m best.

Although short on numbers, there was also some fine results from the Under 17 Women. Sydney Foley took six seconds off her best in winning a competitive 1500m race and set another PB for third in the B 300m and added another third place in the B discus. Freya Killilea was discus runner-up and won the B shot, with Anne-Prisca Djondo third in the shot A and Adelaide Thatcher-Gray took A javelin honours.   Second claim athlete Yasmin Uwakwe was sprint hurdles runner up and Annie Grannell third in the 3000m

The Under 20 Women’s team were low in numbers but made it in quality. Jess Mitchell won the 3000m from start to finish and Kate O'Neill was runner up in the 1500m in a season's best. Jade Kavanagh claimed second in the 200m in a tight finish and was third in the 400m. Jess Collier's discus PB placed her third and Charlie Wright was third in the P pole vault as she tackled five events.

Matthew Agnimel's win in B 400m for the Under 20 Men was the only victory, as Reece Harriott's season best placed third in the A, as did Richard Akinyebo's PB equalling 200m run. Sam Atkins had a buy day with his best points coming in the B shot, adding to his 1500m and 'chase efforts. Harry Jones took over half a minute off his 3000m PB for third, and Ben Olusesan was third in the long jump B event.

At the end of the day the squad had to settle for sixth but hope to field a stronger squad next time out to close the gap on the teams above them
