HAVERING ATHLETES FLY THE FLAG

London Heathrow Youth Games Cross Country, Parliament Hill, Saturday 24 November 2001

A number of Havering Mayesbrook AC young athletes represented the Borough of Havering in the London Heathrow Youth Games cross country event at Parliament Hill Fields on Saturday. All played a part in an excellent all-round team performance that saw Havering finish in joint 3rd place with Barnet, just a few points behind the winners Harrow and runners-up Ealing.

Particularly impressive for Havering was the years 9/10 girls’ squad who took the team gold medal with four finishers in the top 20. Megan Foley and Charlotte Watkins ran strongly to take 3rd and 4th places respectively with Caroline Smith in 11th and Carmel Munson 16th. Nicola Scofield and Lynsey Clark completed the team. There was also a good performance from Robyn Matson (7th ) competing for Barking & Dagenham.

In the youngest age group, the years 7/8 girls’ squad took the team silver medal with Lauren Clark a splendid 2nd, Georgina Clark 12th, Lauren McVicar 19th and Elizabeth Hosier (Coopers School) 20th. Claire Robinson (33rd) and Lisa Scofield (36th) were also well placed.

A silver team medal also went to the years 7/8 boys’ squad with Matthew Watkins finishing 3rd, Ross Clarke 9th, Jay Ryan 14th and Paul Adair 22nd. The strength of the Club’s young athletes was demonstrated also when Ashley Reece won the race for Barking & Dagenham in tremendous style.

The years 9/10 boys’ squad contributed well with Aaron Churchouse finishing 16th, Andrew Meech 24th, Paul Andrews 25th and Andrew Luck 33rd. Ashley Roberts placed 15th for the Barking & Dagenham team in the same race.

Due to illness, the Havering girls’ years 11/12 squad only had three members but there were excellent top-20 placings for Emma Baglin in 7th and Faye Powell in 11th.

The boys’ years 11/12 squad struggled to make an impact although Rob Howe ran very well to finish 11th with Andrew Bright in 31st position.

With a win in girls’ cricket and and a second in boys’ rugby recently, and following Saturday’s 3rd place, Havering are again well placed for a successful 2002 London Heathrow Youth Games campaign culminating in the finals at Crystal Palace in July.
