Crystal Palace Indoor Sprints and Hurdles, 3 February 2001

Nicola Schofield and Danielle Ross picked up the Grand Prix Awards for their overall performances in the three round Under 15 Indoor Sprints and Hurdles Series which came to a conclusion at Crystal Palace on Saturday. Schofield equalled her 60m sprint best for the day's fastest time to clinch the sprint award while Ross matched her previous best time to clinch the hurdles prize.

Starting the day in joint first with Medway's Kelly Roomes, Nicola blasted to a PB-equalling 8.3 secs in the opening 60m sprint heat, to see off her main rival for the Under 15 Grand Prix award, a feat she repeated in the other two races to clinch the prize. Her time was also equal fastest of the three event series. Danielle Ross matched her previous best of 8.7 secs in all three races, while Caroline Smith continued her improvement with a new best time of 8.9 secs.

In the afternoon 60m hurdles races Danielle Ross equalled her personal best of 9.9 secs in the first round to put the Grand Prix award beyond doubt. Despite twice improving her own PB, first to 9.9 secs and then to 9.8 secs, Nicola Schofield was unable to overhaul the lead her teammate had built up from the first two rounds when she had had the upper hand. Caroline Smith was close to her best with 10.2 secs, while Katie O'Sullivan, in her first indoor competition of the winter, improved to 10.7 secs.

In the under 17 age group birthday girl Nina Brennan celebrated her 16th anniversary with a 10.3 secs PB, and matched this in the remaining two races. Older sister Claire Brennan competed in the senior age group and clocked 10.7 secs.
