Golden Weekend at Chelmsford
Essex Championships 13-14 May 2000
STUART LEAPS TO RECORD
In heatwave conditions, Havering Mayesbrook AC's athletes were among the medals on Days 2 and 3 of the Essex County Championships at Chelmsford last Saturday and Sunday.
Gold medal highlight of the weekend was a record breaking performance in the Senior Men's Long Jump by GB International Stuart Wells. In leaping to 7.57m, the 20 year old smashed the Championship record held by his father, Trevor, since 1976.
Another Championship record was broken when Laurie Cossey took the Junior Women's 800m. Cossey who had taken silver in the 400m on Saturday, ran a finely judged race 24 hours later to set a new record of 2mins 13.3sec.
Gold medals also went to Phil Sadler who sprinted magnificently to take the Senior Men's 200m; Claire Sargent who overcame a hamstring injury to win the under-15 Girls' 75m Hurdles; the ever consistent Debbie Sullivan in the Senior Women's 1500m; Kevin Deacon with some fine throwing in the under-17 Boys' Hammer; Dorita Harmse with a superb performance in the Senior Women's 800m; under-17 star Faye Fullerton who equalled the Championship record in winning the 800m in scintillating style; Megan Foley who led from start to finish in the under-13 Girls' 800m adding to her gold in the 1200m on Day 1; Jason Lendon who ran the Senior Men's 3000m Steeplechase to perfection; and Sarah Deacon with some impressive throwing in the Junior Women's Hammer.
Club athletes also won ten more silver medals and thirteen bronze. Silvers went to Sarah Deacon (Junior Women's Discus), Gavin Maley (Senior Men's 800m), Laura Jones (under-15 Girls' 100m), Hannah Gamester (Junior Women's 100m), Kevin White (Veteran's 400m), Nina Brennan (under-17 Girls' 300m Hurdles), Otis Griffith (Senior Men's 400m Hurdles), Glen Coppin (Junior Men's 1500m), Ruth McMenemy (Senior Women's 200m), and Terry O'Leary (under-15 Boys' Discus).
Bronze medals went to Griffith (Senior Men's 400m), Hudson McLean (Veterans' 100m), Adrian Lunan (under-17 Boys' 100m), Kate Brewington (Junior Women's 100m Hurdles and High Jump), Corrina Keevil (Senior Women's Triple Jump), Nicola Schofield (under-15 Girls' 75m Hurdles), Kevin Tufton (Senior Men's Pole Vault), Sam Harrison (Junior Men's Javelin), Jo Crane (Junior Men's 200m), Melanie Harrison (under-15 Girls' Discus), Brennan (under-17 Girls' Discus) and O'Leary (under-15 Boys' Shot).
These Championships have traditionally been a happy hunting ground for Havering Mayesbrook athletes and this year was no exception. Indeed, rarely has the Club's strength in depth been so well demonstrated.
Competition continues this weekend when both the Girls' and Boys' under-17 teams are in action in their respective McDonald's leagues. The girls travel to Hillingdon whilst the boys face strong opposition at Enfield. Meanwhile, the Ladies Southern League team are at High Wycombe on Saturday.
