Essex Schools Championsbips, Basildon 10 June 2000
Havering Mayesbrook's young athletes performed well against the county's best athletes and were again well to the fore in the Essex county schools' championships at Basildon on Saturday 10th June claiming nine gold, seven silver medals and a bronze.
The Junior Girls (U-15s) grabbed most golds on the day. Laura Jones (100m), Sara Luck (800m), Claire Sargent (75m Hurdles) and Melanie Harrison (discus) recorded gold medal performances. All four await the team selectors' decisions on whether they will be in the Essex team for the English Schools champs at Sheffield in July.
The two Junior boys' gold medal winners - Matthew Kelsey (100m) and Bob Thanda (400m) - can look forward to automatic selection, having reached the national standards. Thanda's time was a further massive improvement on his personal best, set the week before, while Kelsey hopes to emulate the feat of his older brother Ross, who was an English School's finalist three years ago.
Faye Fullerton claimed a new Championship best performance (CBP) in winning the Intermediate girls 1500m and is also guaranteed selection for the national event.
Silver medals went to Nina Brennan (Inter 300m hurdles), Gemma Tyler (Inter 300m), Caroline Smith (junior 800m) and Charlotte Watkins (Year 7 - 600m) while for the boys Kevin Deacon (Inter -Hammer), Mark Gardner (Inter Long Jump) and Andrew Bartlett (Junior 200m) also gained runners up medals. Greg Smith gained bronze for his Inter Javelin efforts.
The Year 7 championships do not lead to the National finals but provide a valuable stepping stone to higher things. Megan Foley recorded a new club best and also a CBP when winning the 600m by five seconds, while newcomer Chloe van Wulven, who is in training with the club, was a clear winner in the 75m hurdles, recording a CBP on her way to gold.
