Essex League Round 4, Colchester Garrison, 13 January 2001

Ladies Stay in Front in Essex XC League
There were no surprises in the fourth of the five race Essex Cross Country League series  on Saturday as the domination of Havering Mayesbrook Ladies' teams continued. In contrast to the mud bath conditions at the hilly Claybury course for the Essex Championships the previous week, the Colchester Garrison venue was drier and much firmer underfoot. But this did little to help the opposition as the Havering Mayesbrook ladies again claimed the prizes.

Megan Foley, who missed the last race through illness, returned to claim her third league victory in the under 13 event, relegating team-mate Charlotte Watkins, winner last time out, to runner up. Robyn Matson in 6th and Lauren Clark in 7th made sure of the team prize.

Sara Luck, who also missed the last round, was another athlete to make a winning return. Unusually only one other Havering Mayesbrook runner finished in this age group, Lynsey Clark in 12th, and the club lost out on the usual team prizes. But as the best four of five results count in the overall league standings, HMAC still look good for team gold.

Lauren Deadman was again untouchable in the combined under 17/ under 20 event, retaining her unbeaten league record to make it four wins out of four. Good runs from Lydia Comley (4th), Helen Biscoe (6th) and Faye Powell (18th) ensured another team success.

Team victory eluded the senior ladies team, missing GB International Debbie Sullivan and Nikki Barnett, but runners up spot for Jo Sullivan, ninth place for Hayley Hawes, a return to form in 15th for veteran Ruth O'Sullivan and 19th for Dawn Hawes brought them home in second in the team event.

There was an improved showing for the men's teams, who gained two thirds and a fourth.  In the senior men's race John Barker in 5th, Matt Bland (12th), Graham Pritchard 14th, were well supported by Rob Dickenson 27th, with  Rob Warner and Tony Collins 48th and 56th respectively, the team placing fourth. In the Under 13 boys event first home was Paul Andrews (10th), just ahead of Matthew Watkins 11th, Martyn Chambers 14th, and Christian Newton 15th, the team placing third. The Under 15 boys claimed the same position, with James Deane placing 5th, Robert Howe 7th, Danny Skelt 14th, and Andrew Bright 19th making up the scoring four. Only two under 17 boys compete Andy Hunter (5th) and Martin Meehan (19th).
