Home Win Gives Promotion Boost
National Junior League, Thames Division, Mayesbrook Park 16 July 2000
Havering Mayesbrook's Under 20 ladies secured the Thames Division title in their home National Junior Athletics League fixture at Mayesbrook Park on Sunday, in the third of the four match series. Another massive victory, ahead of weak opposition, ensured that they are unlikely to be overtaken in the Division and virtually booked their place in the promotion fixture in September against the other divisional winners competing for places in the Southern Premier Division next season.
Kate Brewington was in stunning form recording three wins and a second place, with the highlights being a new high jump personal best of 1.63m and long jump leap of 5.42m - her best for three years. Nina Brennan also set new marks with personal bests in both the triple jump and 200m, winning both B string events. Hannah Gamester was also in good form, jumping to her best ever distances in the long and triple jump events. Faye Fullerton, who already leads this year's National Junior League rankings with her 800m and 3000m performances, ran the second best 1500m time in the league this season.
The team is going from strength to strength and the strong all-round track performance was backed up with good field events results. The absence through holidays of four regular members, including 400/800m star Laurie Cossey, had little impact, as team ma nager Tony Benton was able to call on four other junior athletes who competed in the league for the first time this season.
The final league fixture is at Ilford in three weeks [13 August] and the team plan to sign off their league campaign in style with another convincing victory to set them up for the sterner challenge of the September promotion match.
Match Result:
1. Havering Mayesbrook 391 points
2. Thurrock 217 points
3. Dartford 159 points
4. Ilford 74 points
5. Southend 25 points
