Junior ladies too hot to handle

National Junior League, Thames Division, Dartford 18 June 2000

In heatwave conditions Havering Mayesbrook's Under 20 Ladies team were too hot for the opposition to handle, running out comfortable winners of the Thames Division match on Sunday, well ahead of Thurrock and hosts Dartford.

Thrower Sarah Deacon was in superb form launching the hammer to a new club junior record of 35.04m. She also took the discus event, placed second in both the shot and unfamilar 400m hurdles with new personal best performances, as well as a third placed javelin effort.

Kate Brewington was another team member to record new marks improving her high jump best with a winning 1.60m leap, also taking top honours in her 100m hurdles speciality, and runners up spots in 100m B string and Long Jump.

15-year-old Nina Brennan stepped up a league to make her junior competition debut and came away with three wins with success in the A string triple jump, B string shot and 200m events, the latter with a new personal best time.

Faye Fullerton was again in star form coming from behind to win in 800m A race in a time close to the league record, before equalling her 400m best and then placing second in the 1500m behind Thurrock's Kate Smith. Her GCSE exams now finished she now flies out to Spain for a well earned break. Laurie Cossey, despite suffering badly in the sweltering heat, gained a double victory in the B 800m and A 400m.

Other winning performances came from Hannah Gamester (B Long Jump), Lauren Haley (100m Hurdles B), Sarah Benton (B Triple Jump), Helen Biscoe (1500m B) and Melissa Felton who returned to competition after recent illness to clinch the B string discus event.

The quartet of Lauren Haley, Natalie Ambersley, Kate Brewington and Hannah Gamester rounded off the day with a win in the 4 x 100m relay event. Debutant Ambersley had earlier recorded a new best in the 200m event.

With convincing victories in the first two of the four match series, and with home advantage in the next league fixture at Mayebrook Park in four weeks, the team now look certain to qualify as League Champions for the promotion fixture at Abingdon in September.
