Throwers
lead the way
Havering Mayesbrook AC’s junior men concluded their
first season in the National Junior League for many years with an excellent
third place in their match at the Dartford Harriers track on Sunday. Not
surprisingly, the match was won by the home club (the League leaders) with
282pts with Basildon AC second on 242pts just five points ahead of Havering
Mayesbrook with Thurrock, Bexley, Woodford Green and Southend behind.
The
throwers once again led the way with wins for Kevin Deacon (Hammer), Tom Melrose
(‘B’ Shot) and Andrew Tierney (‘B’ Discus). Tierney finished top points
scorer including new personal bests in the Triple Jump and ‘B’ Hammer.
Deacon also set new personal best figures in the Shot and Melrose took second
place in the Discus.
In
an exciting high jump competition with the winner from Basildon clearing 2.05m,
Steven Prady equalled his personal best to take second place with 1.90m.
Other
‘B’ string winners were Andrew Hunter (a new personal best in the Triple
Jump), Peter Phillips in the High Jump with a new pb of 1.65m and Peter Jones in
the ‘B’ 400m Hurdles. Phillips also took second in the ‘A’ 400m Hurdles.
The
sprinters were below par with Andy Green not yet race fit following a hamstring
injury.
The
result leaves Havering Mayesbrook in third place in the League with Team Manager
John Deacon pleased with the overall performance. ‘A small squad restricted us
somewhat but third place in our first season is encouraging. With a stronger
team next season, we must stand a reasonable chance of winning the League’.
