National Junior Men's League, Thames/Cam Division, Walthamstow 23 June 2002

THROWERS LEAD THE WAY

Havering Mayesbrook AC’s junior men athletes put up an improved performance in their National Junior League match at Waltham Forest on Sunday.

The field athletes were in good form with Andrew Tierney achieving three victories in the ‘A’ string Hammer, the ‘B’ Javelin and ‘B’ Triple Jump.  For good measure, he finished 3rd in the Discus and 4th in the Shot. The other regular thrower on duty, Tom Melrose, also performed well with ‘B’ string successes in the Hammer and Discus and 3rd in the ‘B’ Shot.

High jumper Steven Prady who has been having trouble with his run-up recently, opted for a five-stride take-off but still leaped 1.85m for 3rd place in a high level competition. Prady also threw the javelin for the first time in two years, achieving 36.45m for 5th place and also took 5th in the Long Jump with 5.54m.

Despite struggling with a back injury, Peter Phillips earned good points in the ‘B’ High Jump with 1.60m for 2nd place.

Also in the field, Andrew Hunter set a new personal best when finishing 4th in the Triple Jump with 11.10m.

The track athletes found the going tough but Phillips took 3rd in the 400m in 52.9sec whilst another under-17, Joe Golding, ran strongly for 4th in the 800m. Andy Green in his first competition of the year, took 3rd in the 100m.

In very warm conditions, the 3000m saw two Havering Mayesbrook athletes – Hunter and Ashley Roberts – stay in contention throughout with Hunter taking 4th in the ‘A’ and Roberts setting an new personal best in finishing 2nd in the ‘B’.

Two newcomers to Club track competition, David Price and Paul Haggerty, also ran well in the 1500m.

At the end of the afternoon, the relays brought unexpected points with a superb 2nd place for the 4 x 100m squad consisting of Prady, Phillips, Tom Gregory and Green. Not to be outdone, the 4 x 400m quartet took 3rd place with further gutsy performances from Phillips, Prady, Hunter and Golding.

The result leaves the Club in 3rd place in the league. If the squad can stay together for the visit to Ipswich on July 28 and with the return of others including Andrew Bartlett and Mark Gardiner, there is every chance of an improvement in the league position.
