Deacon goes from strength to strength!

Although only seven athletes were available to compete, Havering Mayesbrook AC’s National Junior League Men’s team performed creditably in their opening Thames Division meeting at Ilford on Sunday.

With the field events starting earlier than the track, first results were encouraging notably from the throwers with Kevin Deacon and Andrew Tierney completing an ‘A’ and ‘B’ string double success in the Hammer. Deacon set a new personal best and Club record with 52.17m.

At the same time, Mark Connelly won the Long Jump with 5.66m, a little short of his best but highly encouraging for the new season. Later in the afternoon, Connelly also took the High Jump, his main event, with a leap of 1.70m.

The throwers continued to accumulate good points with Tierney completing a hat trick of ‘B’ string successes in the Shot and Javelin. In the latter event, under-17 newcomer Harry Tyler took an excellent 2^nd place with 38.52m. Deacon took third in the ‘A’ Shot and second in the ‘B’ Discus whilst Tierney was third in the ‘A’ Discus to complete successful days for both athletes.

On the track, Simon Parker and Jonathan Buckler ran well in the sprint events whilst Martin Heys ran strongly for second place in the 800m and also gave the 400m a go.

Overall, the team finished in third place behind City of Norwich and Herts Phoenix but ahead of Woodford Green/Essex Ladies, Ipswich, Thurrock and Basildon – an encouraging start to the new campaign.
