National Junior Men's League, Thames Division, Mayesbrook 27 July 2003

Final placings:

A small Havering Mayesbrook AC’s junior men’s squad performed with great credit in their Thames Division Junior League match at the Mayesbrook Arena on Sunday.

The team spirit displayed throughout the afternoon was well demonstrated in the last two events of the day (the 2000m Steeplechase and the 4 x 400m relay) with the home club lying in 4^th place. Throwers Kevin Deacon and Andrew Tierney who had earlier contributed a large amount of points in the field events, volunteered to run the 2000m Steeplechase, something neither had done before. Both gained valuable points with Tierney finishing 2^nd  in the ‘A’ string and Deacon doing likewise in the ‘B’ string.

The 4 x 400m squad – Michael Waller, Andrew Meech, Simon Parker and Jonathan Buckler – then performed magnificently to win the event in style. The points from these two events took Havering Mayesbrook from 4^th to 2^nd behind runaway winners, City of Norwich.

Deacon took the ‘man-of-the-match’ award for his 50.08m Hammer victory and also won the ‘B’ Shot. Tierney set three new personal bests with a ‘B’ string success in the Hammer, 2^nd place in the ‘A’ Shot and 3^rd in the ‘A’ Discus.

On the track, sprinters Parker and Buckler also contributed valuable points before their excellent legs in the 4 x 400m and, for good measure, demonstrated their versatility with good performances in  the Triple Jump.

The squad included under-17s Michael Waller, Andrew Meech and Harry Tyler. Waller showed his all-rounder skills in the 400m Hurdles and High Jump, Meech ran well for 3^rd place in the 800m and Tyler threw to his best in the Javelin.

Early afternoon injuries to Steven Prady and Mark Gardiner meant a reshuffle of resources for the remainder of the match but the team responded well.
