National Junior League, Southern Premier Division, Guildford 29 July 2001

Late charge wins third place again for Junior ladies

Faye Fullerton was in blistering form at Guildford on Sunday, smashing the National Junior League 800m record and beating English Schools champion Lisa Dobriskey in the bargain. Both girls were inside the 6-year-old record as Faye overhauled her Ashford opponent in the last 30 metres to win in 2m 9.4 secs. Faye returned later to smash her 400m best, winning the B event in 59.3 secs and went even faster in the 4 x 400m relay with  58.7 secs anchor leg.

Thrower Sarah Deacon's superb form continued as she yet again improved her own club hammer record with 38.78m. She led throughout but was beaten by  last-gasp effort from Ashford's Sarah Dobriskey - Lisa's younger sister. Deacon also scored valuable runners-up points in the A-discus and B-javelin. Young Melanie Harrison also had reason to celebrate, winning both discus and hammer B events, the latter in  a new PB, as well as throwing a new shot best of 9.26m. Multi-eventer Siobhan Dennehy piled up 46 points over 5 events, with one second place, three thirds and a fourth.

The 4 x 100m relay team repeated their success of the last meeting, this time with clear victory. Hayley Mottram, substituting for the injured Fran Rigby, led off and good legs by Hannah Gamester and Gemma Tyler set Laura Jones off to a winning last leg. Gamester had earlier finished fourth in the pole vault A and third in the long jump B, Tyler third in the B 200m, Jones fourth in the A 200m and fifth in the A 100m, and Mottram fifth in the 400m.

The 4 x 400m relay squad also combined well. Hayley Mottram provided a first leg lead, and Melissa Felton and Helen Biscoe kept the team in contention before Faye Fullerton's excellent last leg confirmed third place. Felton had earlier gained two hurdles fourth places, while Biscoe had also placed fourth in the 1500m A. Lydia Comley ran a storming 800m B, leading from the gun and only being denied victory when she was caught in the last few strides. But she suffered badly for her effort in the extreme heat and had to miss the 4 x 400m relay.

Another team member to suffer was Fran Rigby who pulled a hamstring when well placed in the 100m B, and had to miss the long jump and relay. Laura O'Neill bravely completed the 3000m despite suffering a nose bleed just before her race. Nina Brennan was unhappy in the sweltering conditions but still gained good points with a triple jump B third and 400m hurdles B fourth.

Also in action in the 16-strong team were debutant Rosie Saunders, third in the B 1500m and Sarah Benton whose season's best triple jump secured fourth place.

After lying fourth throughout the afternoon the barnstorming finish with the relays and discus ensured third place, behind clear winners Norwich and Shaftesbury Barnet, but just ahead of Ashford. The Under 20 squad now travel to Watford for the fourth and final fixture in two weeks (12 August) assured a place in the National Final at Derby on Sunday 9 September.
