National Junior Women’s League, National Final - Sunday 8th September 2002

There were six medals, just one gold, and a new club u17 triple jump record for Kirsty Smith as a young Ladies Junior Team placed seventh against strong opposition in the NJAL Final at Derby on Sunday.

Kirsty Smith improved her own club under 17 triple jump record three times, finishing with a 10.93m leap, some 23 cms further than before, but it was only good enough for fourth place. There was however a medal in the B string event as Lynsey Clark's opening 10.02m effort won her third place and a bronze medal.

As predicted Mel Harrison and Sarah Deacon brought home medals, with both taking podium places in hammer and discus. Both throwers were close to their best in the hammer brought as Sarah's 42.26m throw brought her bronze, while Mel took B string gold with a 33.37m effort. In the discus each won silver as Mel Harrison spun the discus out to 37.72m - her second best ever - while Sarah celebrated her final performance in the u20 team with the same placing in the B event with a 32.07 throw.

Sara Luck picked up the only track medal as she returned to form to come home third in the 800m with 2m 16.36 secs, and although out of the 400m medals she clocked a new PB of 60.10 secs. New personal bests were also achieved by 400m hurdles pairing of Nicola Schofield (69.98 secs - 6th) and Nina Brennan (73.99 secs - 4th).

Katie O'Sullivan and Hannah Gamester - who also now leaves the junior ranks - both just missed out on medals in the pole vault with a pair of fourth placings, while Katie also claimed high jump fourth. Caroline Smith (800m) and Ria Lyons (400m and 1500m) both placed sixth in their events while the 12 strong squad was completed by Laura Jones who picked up vital points in both 100m, 200m and relay.

Although the team was hit by late withdrawals from English Schools' 400m Champion Natalie Street who pulled out with a calf injury, and Hayley Mottram - who broke down on the way up to Derby - team manager Tony Benton said that this did not affect the results. "I knew how tough it would be and on paper I had expected that we would come eight and last so seventh on the day against the best  in the UK was a bonus.  It was a great day and everyone will have learnt something which will be great for such a young team - 9 of the 12 were in action for the u17s at Birmingham last week"
