National Junior League, Southern Premier Division, Barnet Copthall 28 April 2002
Two
club records as junior ladies
Two club records toppled as the Havering Mayesbrook U20 team came from behind to win their Premier Division fixture in appalling wet and windy conditions at Hendon on Sunday. Although always in contention the final match outcome was only settled when the results of the discus, the last event to finish, were finally added to take the Havering Mayesbrook Ladies past league champions City of Norwich by a four point margin.
| Both club records
came in the field events. Nineteen-year-old Sarah Deacon twice broke her club senior and
junior hammer record when winning the event. Her opening throw added 50cms
to her own weeks old record and she went on to hurl the 4kg implement out
to 42.40m. Sarah also recorded a new shot personal best of 8.88m when
placing third in the B event. She also won the B discus but her excellent
day came to an unhappy end when she slipped in the circle and strained her
leg.
Kirsty Smith three times broke the club U17 triple jump record, just three days after her 15th birthday, in only her second competition at the event and first outdoors with virtually two more seasons ahead of her two. The All Saints Year 10 student erased Corrina Keevil's five year old mark with her second jump of 10.29, improved to 10.41 in the fourth round before her fifth round leap of 10.46m not only sealed a new u17 best but also took her to third on the club all-time u20 lists. Her performance laced her fourth in a good class competition. Kirsty had earlier took the same position in the B long jump. |

Katie O'Sullivan, also 15, recorded some eye-catching performances. After winning the B high jump she successfully tackled two events for the first time - leaping 9.06m for third place in the B triple jump and and clocking 18.6 secs for the 100m hurdles, finishing second, adapting with ease to the higher hurdles which are spaced further apart than those in her usual 80m race.
Mel Harrison was another 15 year old in good form winning the B hammer and placing second in both A shot & discus.
There were some excellent track performances from the more established squad members. Lauren Deadman and Faye Fullerton were both convincing winners in the 1500m and 3000m respectively. Lauren tracked rival Ruth Proctor of Norwich for the first two and three-quarter laps of the 1500m race before striking clear at the bell to come home for an impressive win in a good time. Junior international Faye Fullerton soon opened up a commanding lead in the early part of the 3000m before easing back over the second half as the strong winds took their toll.
Lauren and Faye combined with Sara Luck and Hayley Mottram to romp away with victory in the last track event the 4x400m relay. Sara gave the team a first leg lead which Hayley and Lauren were never in danger of losing before Faye's blistering anchor ensured winning points well clear of Aldershot.
Earlier in the day Sara and Hayley had both claimed second places - Sara in the high jump & in the 400m B, in which she made an impressive debut, and Hayley in the 800m A. Hayley also placed third in the A 400m. Another second placer was the youngest team member, Natalie Adams still 14, who ran a gutsy B 1500m to come close to her best in the windy conditions.
Team captain Hannah Gamester picked up third place pole vault points and for good measure came fourth in both 100m and long jump. Laura Jones took sixth places against top opposition in both A string sprints while Nicola Schofield defied the torrential rain to place fourth in the 200m B. The threesome combined with busy Sara Luck to place fifth in the sprint relay.
Completing the line up were Ria Lyons (800m B - 5th), Faye Powell (3000m B - fourth) and Melissa Felton (javelin & 100m hurdles - sixth).
Team manager Tony Benton was delighted with his young team' showing but expects the opposition to come back with a vengeance in the remaining three fixtures
