Club record for Kirsty as junior ladies fourth at Eton

The Under 20 ladies team turned in an excellent team performance to finish fourth in a fiercely contested National Junior League Premier Division fixture at Eton on Sunday. Hosts Windsor, Slough, Eton & Hounslow - 4th in the first fixture -  came out on top and with two of the four fixtures gone the HMAC squad lie in second place as the top four teams all share 13 match points and are only separated by event points. Solid results in the remaining two fixtures - at Croydon on 28 July & Walthamstow on 18 August - should secure a place in the National Final at Derby on 8 September.

Triple Jumper Kirsty Smith goes from strength to strength and in a good quality competition she placed third, adding six more centimetres to her week-old club U17 triple jump record with a 10.70m leap.  She had earlier bettered her long jump best with a 4.89 jump, also placing third.

Wins were hard to come by and HMAC athletes were restricted to just four.

Newcomer Natalie Street (2nd claim member) made an impressive debut for the team, scorching to 400m victory from the outside lane in a new PB of 56.6 secs. She also placed second in the B triple jump and ran in both relays.

Hayley Mottram made it a 400m win double taking the B event in 59.8 secs, just outside her best. She later stepped in at short notice to run in the B 200m and was rewarded with a new PB of 27.4 secs.

Southern 1500m Champion Lauren Deadman stepped down a distance and was a convincing 800m winner, and then showed great team spirit to score vital points in the 3000m. Versatile Melissa Felton's B string discus win capped a busy day for the 19-yrear-old as she set PBs in the pole vault, shot and javelin. Melissa also ran her first 400m hurdles race of the season.

Despite the absence of key thrower Sarah Deacon the throwing events still produced good points. Mel Harrison earned a shot PB with her 9.89 runners-up effort, and was also second in the hammer and third in the discus. Nina Brennan returned to action for the first time this summer after an injury lay off and in her first u20 competition gained a new hammer PB, placing third, was fourth in the javelin and also gained 400m hurdles points.

With the 12 strong team at full stretch every point was vital. Fran Rigby followed up her long jump B string third with 100m points and a sprint relay leg, Laura Jones ran both sprints, both in season's bests, and also added a relay leg.

Great team spirit came from middle distance runners Faye Powell and Ria Lyons.  Both helped out to score points in the high jump before tackling their main events, Faye scoring in the 3000m B and Ria placing fourth in the 800m B before coming back for 1500m fourth place.

Both relay teams ran well. Kirsty Smith, Natalie Street, Fran Rigby and Laura Jones took the baton round for third place in the sprint event before a high quality 4 x 400m events rounded off the meeting as the foursome of Lauren Deadman (61.8), Ria Lyons (62.3), Hayley Mottram (61.2) and Natalie Street (58.4) recorded 4m 3.7 secs - the fastest time for many years by a club u20squad but had to settle for second to a superb Shaftesbury Barnet foursome.
